What does it mean when a coil must be used with an external resistor? Does it mean a firewall mounted voltage regulator? I have a '71 Supreme with the firewall mounted voltage regulator, and want to make sure I have the correct coil for my application.

 

The resistor is for the points so you don't burn them up while running. You should have a heavy resistor wire already going to your coil so an additional resistor won't be needed. The resistor wire will have a thicker covering on it then other wires. Fairly easy to recognize. Other manufacturers used ballast resistors (ceramic block with a wound wire inside). Sounds like you have a generic coil that's just reminding you to use a resistor. If you don't have points and have converted to a Pertronix like ignition it's a different story.

This has nothing to do with the voltage regulator.
