Chrome wheels or wide whites which do you prefer

Getting ready for a road trip so I switched to my travel tires (radials with the chrome wheels) wife says she likes the chrome better, me not so much, but I don't want travel with the bias tires and fight the road(IFG) affect for 400 miles....What do you think?......Tedd

Your car appears to be pretty close to stock (and real nice, too!). I think it looks much better and correct with the stock wheels, covers and whitewalls.

For a road trip, I'd take the safer alternative.

I like them both, but given the choice I'd have to do the wide whites. They do look awesome on your car Ted.

Wide whites look the best. But if they are old technology and the chrome wheels with blackwalls are current, it's better to be safe!

I love chrome wheels on anything and never cared for white walls.

Agree with this 100%.

Don't they make wide white walls in radial?

Tedd, I have to say I prefer the wide whites and OEM caps on your car. But, I'd bet the radials are more pleasant on a long trip.

They do make wide whitewall in radials but in judged events there is a deduction for radials, as of this year I'm not going to enter in of this type of show. There is a world of difference in the ride with the radials, the bias tires follow every grove in the road and they require a lot more attention to keep the car from wandering , something you don't want to do while gawking on vacation.Plus they only last about 1/2 as long as radials so when there gone I'll buy a set of radial white walls......Tedd

I would use the wide whites...people drove for years and put millions of miles on bias tires and didn't worry

I just decided to take the hit with my white stripe radials when I got tires for my car. It was really an easy decision - I could get the old style bias ply white stripe tires, or modern white stripe radials, for essentially the same price. I like today's technology and I was able to have that, and yesterday's look, and it only cost me 8 points (I guess they don't count the spare) at the Nationals. Worth it, in my opinion (along with my AC Delco battery with a handle - that cost me 10 points but it sure is a lot easier lifting a battery off the tray with the integrated handle than it is trying to muscle it out of there with fingers!).

The wide whites look awesome on your car, but for safety on a long trip I would go with radials.

Radials are for posers... I don't remember my Dad waiting for radials or the SBC to be invented before he'd go on a road trip in his '54 Ford...

We also drove for years without seat belts and many people smoked cigarettes all day. Doesn't mean we still should!!!!!

yes the car looks good with whitewalls but for a long drive safety and convenience is more important. Go with the tires that are safer

Wide whites. Your car is so original and not a hot rod. Nothing wrong with chrome wheels but not on your car. I would go to wide white radials when the time comes. The only thing that could make it look better would be a set of Fiesta Wheel Covers.

I know of what I speak, I have put literly thousands of miles on those very bias ply tires and pretty much fought the pavement every mile, it's very doable just not as fun. She isn't a trailer queen the lady is a driver....Tedd

For Long trips on your Classic Olds car I'd do the Radials....But As pictured under my name is my 69 Olds with new Bias Ply Tires+ Classic Cragers. I wouldnt have anything on my Olds. Nothing Looks as good. Ive never like the looks of Radials on any classic Cars. I drove on Bias for many many years.

This isn't saying much. We ALL drove on bias ply tires "back in the day" because that's all there was, and we made do just fine because that's all there was. You can't miss what you don't know. Doesn't mean, though, that more modern tires aren't safer, more comfortable, and don't provide better handling.

right ...and bias ply tires are safe enough, if you want to be real safe put the car in a trailer and tow it

Personally, I think your car looks the best with the WW, but I would go with the radials for reason mentioned above. @ 55 mph, no one will know the difference other than you the driver.

you have this to contend with: if you drive with the crome everyone is going to say ' hey, look at that old chevy' if you go with the whites people will say 'wow, look at that classy oldsmobile'

I had my 69 442 wide open 120 mph + on bias tires many times back in the day & I'm still around I doubt you will not be traveling half that fast. Bottom line it's your preference. I like the white walls.

Wide whites definitely look the best on your car. I would go with the radial versions because they are the best of both worlds. Can't put a price on safety and comfort. I have them on my 63 Riv and would never go back to bias ply.

I like the wide whites . I have the bias ply whites on my car. Next tire change I will switch to radials. When the car sits a while, especially in winter, it is thump, thump , thump until they warm up. You have a beautiful car with either set of wheels.
