Chrome valve covers
Chrome valve covers
Anyone using chrome valve covers and are they sealing properly? I replaced my leaking valve cover gaskets with a Felpro rubber gasket but they continue to leak. I suspect that the aftermarket covers are not as good as the stock covers. the sealing surface around some of the bolt holes don't seam to have as much surface area as the stock covers. My chrome covers are a bit worn from changing them a few times so I'm going to get new ones. I intend to use the Felpro gaskets with the rigid core and inserts at the bolt holes to prevent over tightening. My stock covers are no good. They were in my garage in the one spot where water sometimes gets in, water pooled in one and rusted it out otherwise I would have put them back on. I intend to get plain chrome valve covers. I don't want the edlebrock covers, I suspect they are the same only twice as much money with their name on them. Have people been able to use the Chrome covers without getting leaks and without having to use sealers?
I put new chrome covers on mine over the winter with the rubber gaskets and had a leak on the passenger side the first startup. I found that you really have to make sure all are tightened the same. Also I started at the bottom center bolt then the one to the left and then the one to the right and so on. Then did the top center after. I believe that I also tightened all around again just to make sure that they were all the same.I had originally used a sealer and did not remove it , I only loosened the bolts and then retightened. So far it is working fine now.
