Looking for a recommendation for aftermarket round chrome open element air cleaner for 4BBL. Need a smooth top to accept a printed top plate. Many are out there, but which ones will not rust out in a year.

Yup. Holding out hope there is something on the market that is not crap.

 

Ames Performance might have an air cleaner top..the 17” looks nice.

 

This guy regularly posts these for sale on Facebook Marketplace and ebay. I don't know if the embossed Oldsmobile graphic screws up what you're trying to do.

I am going to be selling this one, just put on my car to mock up something. Polished Aluminum Flat Top w/ Fins, Red Washable Filter, Chrome Base for 4bbl. and it is 14"x3". Can be turned where the fins are running side to side as well.

 

Aftermarket chrome sucks. Find a top in good shape that fits your needs, and have it plated by a reputable chrome plater! I do this all the time with SBC thermostat housings.

 

I went with a satin black Edelbrock cover and it looks sharp with the 455 blue valve covers, but I don't have any other chrome under the hood.

 

I bought a Cal Custom(?) chrome air cleaner back in the early 1980s from the local auto parts store. After 20 years or so, it was kinda rusty so I sanded it down, painted it engine color, and slapped an air cleaner decal on it. It's been looking nice for around 20 years now.
