Is the Center of the World Moving to the Orient?

A few hours ago, aap.com.au had a short item that made me think, “Is Stupid Government a redundant expression?”
What the Deep State sells to the Chinese, we rarely hear about unless we occasionally get to read between the lines. Obviously, bad behavior during the Government Motors episode is still coming known.
Two years after Holden’s announcement that it will cease automobile production in Australia in 2017, SAIC Motor Corporation announced their intent to manufacture cars in Port Melbourne, Victoria. Initially their lines will use names acquired during the 2008 global recession.
In a press conference in Canberra with SAIC president Chen Zhixin, PM Malcolm Turnbull said government support was a key point in making this an attractive venture for SAIC, which will receive a 15-year tax holiday for establishment of their assembly plant.
The initial SAIC models will be in the Oldsmobile and Pontiac lines because of the wide recognition of those historic nameplates.

With tectonic shift the Pacific plates are almost in unison. The mid oceanic rift is separating the two main plates of the Asian and American continents but subduction along the 'ring of fire' on the Asian side and also along the western coasts of both North and South America is keeping things pretty much in unison.

Railguy, I wouldn't rule anything out. Ford is leaving Australia too, not just GM. Ford and GM won't stop selling cars in Australia, they'll be bringing them in from elsewhere and we don't know what they'll be based on or what they'll be calling them.

Australia guaranteed the loss of their manufacturing base by joining so-called free trade groups that still have tariffs against Australian-manufactured goods. The free trade goes one way, into Australia.

All Australia will have left to sell is their natural resources--and the prices of coal, iron ore, and most of their other exports have cratered. I hope we can retain what's left of our US-based manufacturing, otherwise our middle-class jobs will be gone and we will join Australia in being a service economy with a surplus of entry-level jobs.

Make sure your kids learn a trade! You can't export those jobs.

I did hear on national news that Buick will manufacture their small SUV in China and ship finished product to USA for sale. Must be a cost savings issue.

Railguy, look on aap.com.au or search "Holden closing." Australia is too small and far away for most people to care; media do not cover many things with low interest to the average person.
