7040258 is the carb number for 1970 W-30 automatic.
7040253 is for a 1970 442 manual trans car (non-W-30 car).
Saw a "7040258" for sale here at Carlisle today
Possibly one of the worst restamps I've ever seen. They must have milled about 1/8 of an inch off of the number pad, then did a horrible job of stamping the new number.

I'm ever so curious about these things when they're noted, as you did, Joe. Trying to remove my sarcastic nature - who does "they" refer to? Why would "they" mill 1/8" off the number pad. Can "they" validate it's a true 258? Call me a pessimist I'm fine with it.

You have to remove the original stamped number in order to have a blank pad to stamp the new number. Typically that is done by taking a skim cut off the pad. Unless one is very careful when doing this, it leaves a telltale step that is not present on a virgin casting. In this case the step was so large as to slap you in the face when you looked at it. Then "they" who were trying to fake this carb were VERY careless when stamping the '258 number. It was extremely obvious that this was not a factory stamp.

Thanks for that. That's what I was initially suspecting you were implying in your post, just wanted to validate. I would suspect the vendor attempting to sell this carburetor is either: (1) hoping José Feliciano or Stevie Wonder might buy it; or, (2) it's been for sale for a really long time.

Or (3) doesn't know it's a fake. The carb was not restored. Once I saw the restamp, I didn't bother to ask the price.
