carb adjustment

Ok guys I need a little assistance. My 71 Cutlass carburator is out of adjustment and stalls on me when I put it in drive and drive off. however, in idle it performs perfectly and doesnt stall untill I put it in drive. A little history: This problem started when i had to make an adjusted because the choke wasnt opening as the engine was warming up. Could someone assist me in how to make this adjustment.

Turn each air fuel mixture screw in until the engine idle starts to drop, then back off 1/4 turn. Or you can use a vacuum gage and adjust ea for the highest vacuum, or you can use a tach and adjust ea for the highest rpm. Then adjust your idle to 800 in park.

What engine and carb do you have in the car, and when is the last time the carb was rebuilt? With the amount of ethanol in the gas, it car destroy the rubber parts in the carb. But it does sound like a lean cindition that kills the engine when a load is put on it by putting it in gear.

It sounds choke related, since the problem started when you made some changes to that. If you don't have a factory manual, get one, and assuming the rest of the carb is in good condition, go through all the adjustments to get it right, and don't skip any of them. Factory Manuals are not cheap, but they are neccessary if you are serious about mantaining your car. I still have my 69 Pontiac Manual I bought when I bought my 69 GTO back in 1972. If there is a question on the condition of the carb, I'd rebuild it, and I'd buy a (more expensive and more complete) kit from www.clifffshighperformance.com to get all the good parts that are not effected by the ethanol in todays gas.

Thanks oldscutlass, got her running good now. All she needed is some minor adjustments of the fuel/air screws...
