Do you have any idea what the Desoto convertible they destroyed would be worth today? Way more than the SS396. Back then it was just an old clunker.

I don't find the DeSoto's roofline to be as attractive as claimed. Perhaps, stronger in a roll-over?
A heavier vehicle will of course need larger braking surfaces:
