Canadian Car Finds............2 more saved......
Hi guys,
About a month ago, Ted (sammy) and I decided to go on a little venture together to purchase some Oldsmobiles and have some fun!
The first car we purchased was a 72 Cutlass Supreme Convertible.
It's Viking Blue (originally Sequoia Green), with a white bench interior and a white top. Its a K code car 350, 4 barrel, single exhaust. It's Canadian documented and has been with one family since new.
The second car purchased a few days ago was a 71 442 with 56K original miles.
The car is 4 speed, bench seat, with a M22 transmission. It's Nordic Blue, white bench interior, and a white stripe. No OAI. The interior is in mint condition and requires zero attention. The car sits today in mostly black epoxy primer with rust free southern fenders. Everything is present to complete the car.
The story on how we found the 71 442 is pretty interesting and one that I think should be shared.
Here we go.........
Approx. a week ago I located an 350 engine in a local classifieds ad that was about an hour away from Ted.
Ted followed up with the ad and during the initial conversation about the 350 engine the seller informed Ted that he also had a 71 Olds Cutlass that his dad and had purchased for a father/son project.
Ted was clearly told, that the car was NOT for sale since his dad had passed on. The car had a sentimental value to him. Ted went on his way to purchase the 350 engine that was for sale in the ad.
During Ted's visit he really hit it off with the seller. Ted was there for over 4 hours - while it should of taken him 30 minutes. The seller of the engine went from NOT even wanting to show the car to Ted to wanting Ted to buy it! A few days later Ted worked out a deal to purchase the car! - remember the car was missing the original drivetrain.
From there, Ted purchased the mandatory "Used Vehicle Information Package" UVIP from the Ministry of Transportation. This package is mandatory when you purchase a used car here in Ontario.
The used vehicle information package (UVIP) contains:
- the vehicle details (including the year, make, model, colour, body type, cylinders and power)
- a vehicle registration history in Ontario (including all present and previous owners, their city of residence and odometer reading)
- vehicle lien information
- the fair market value on which the minimum tax payable will apply
- retail sales tax information,
- bills of sale section.
Ted sent me a picture of the UVIP after he picked it up. While looking at the package I noticed that one of the previous owners of the 71 442 was an OLDS acquaintance of mine.
So, I decided to call my friend to get the entire history of the car. During this conversation, I was informed that the original drivetrain could still be around!!!!!
My friend gave me the ph. number to the owner prior to him who had owned the car from approx. 1983 - 2002. I made contact with the family. The family had some great stories to share about the 71 442 with me. It was one of their favourite cars of all time. During this conversation I was told that the original engine, original M22 transmission, and the original driveshaft was present in this guys garage!!!! I made plans to visit with the family the next day. It was only a 1.5 hour drive from my house!
During my visit, it was true, this previous owner had NOT just the original engine, original transmission, driveshaft, bell housing, etc.... BUT he also had some other paperwork including the Protecto - Plate. (POP). The story i was told was that a rod went and therefore the engine was pulled to be rebuilt. The trans was pulled at the same time to be freshened up. He sold the car to my buddy prior to reinstalling the original drivetrain. My buddy didn't care about having the original drivetrain because he had a street race engine and trans ready to go! The engine and trans sit today completely rebuilt!
I couldn't believe my eyes that I was seeing the original drivetrain to the car Ted and I had purchased the day before. I made him a solid offer for the drivetrain and everything else that was present. He wanted to discuss the offer with his wife and would let me know the next day - which is today. I received the call today that he took our offer!!!!! Ted and I are picking up the drivetrain and all other parts to this rare car tomorrow morning.
In short, it took us less than 24 hours from purchasing the car to locating the original drivetrain and 2 previous owners!!! This proves that anything is possible!!
The car will be home in the next few weeks. Ted is waiting for the weather to break to get her back to his shop. Congrats Ted!!!!!
I have posted a few pictures of the 2 cars below including the GM of Canada Paperwork. We will post more pictures once we get the car home in the very near future.
Both Oldsmobile vehicles will be preserved which is the bottom line!

Documents
Good work Sam.
Looks like George made a mistake on the documents for the 1971 442. The HP rating was not 270 in 1971 but rather 340 hp. Get George to fix that.
Dave
EDIT.....never mind. I see at the bottom that he used the net HP rating.

Jeff,
The front seat shoulder belts in a convertible are attached to the conv. top frame behind the cylinder cover in the back seat. The pass through the gap between that cover & the side panel where the window crank is. There was a seat belt holder attached to the rear seat arm rest to secure the belt when not in use. Not real easy to use but they were available. Someone probably had pictures for us?

Great story, thanks for sharing! Always encouraging to know "they're still out there".
Couple weeks ago I found someone with a '72 442 W30 and '72 442, both needing restoration. As soon as I introduced myself and my interest, I got the "They're not for sale!" stance...which was fine because I just wanted to talk to the owner and make a connection. And we did have a great chat...turns out I sold his dad some parts for yet another 442 several months back.

On the Island, no idea if he's a member here - my wife and kids were in the car so I had to get going before we got that far into the conversation. Got his contact information so we can stay in touch, though.
He's had the '72 442 since high school days in the late '80s.

Good work on getting the 455 and M-22 guys. Post more pics.
Canuck Cars
Ted & Sam - Great work on finding a couple of Canuck "barn finds"!
Love that 4 speed car!!
I just got back from wintering in Florida & brought back a rebuild 455 short block for Sam, so his collection of parts & cars are getting bigger, lols!

Nice Score Ted/Sam. I was curious about that message you sent me Ted. Wish I could have said DW could provide you with that info. Too bad they're a Honda dealer now. They moved from Whyte Avenue (where we bought our 67 and first 72 Cutlass) to 34 ave. Since Olds went under in 2004, I seriously doubt they kept any of their old inventory/records as they are no longer associated with GM. Really cool that you found all the paperwork and original driveline. Looks like you've got a project again.
Thanks Allan!
Kinda cool the 4 sp car came from your neck of the woods. Now, if we could just find the original owners....I just want to drive it. I have never driven a stick Olds yet...

Sammy
Can you post a pict of shifter rotated 90'. There should be 3138 and other numbers. The other numbers may be a date code.
I think the numbers are stamped on surface that red arrow is pointing at.
Thanks,
Don W

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see any W29 RPO for 1971. Did you get that mixed up with 72?
