Buying an Olds-Surprise!

Bought an unrestored 1970 CS 350 2bbl numbers matching car from a F__d man today. He had advertised it as a parts car only as the frame had a crack . Got to his place and turns out the car is solid-frame excellent interriorwas also excellent-everything was there even the radio, rear window defrost, wheel discs but no front seats or front seatbelts! He had sold them for 250$ the day before!

Of course,I bought the car

Question-The car had bucket seats and has a column shift-was it common to order buckets without console?
and was the 3502bbl rated cat 250hp?
and what plant code is G from the VIN?

Thanks, Ted

Ted,
Yes, you could get the column shift with buckets or bench. It was way more common to order the buckets with the console though.
The 350 2bbl would be a 9.0: 1 CR - Option L65. don't know the HP rating for it though.
The plant code G is Framingham, Mass

Older local guy I know, every time he sees my 67 442, he tells me the same story of how he ordered one new, with buckets, and ASSUMED that automatically meant it came with a console, only to be disappointed when the car arrived with column shift and no console. This was an auto car.

Great score!! Looks like the interior would just need some new carpet and something to sit on! Rest looks fine.
What was the deal with the frame? An aerea that just looked like a crack?
Glad it was saved! I like stories like this...

There is no such thing as a dumb question-it"s the answers i sometimes wonder about

Which leads perfectly into the answer i have for you; I have no idea
Keep her as it is what my 455 would have looked like originally, except for color.
It is a car that is original, and it should stay that way-so new vinyl roof, paint and some seats

Glad it was saved! I like stories like this...

The undercoating had hardened and cracked,so,for some odd reason, he equated this as being an indicator of a cracked frame
I love stories like this too ! It"s part of the reason I started collecting them! I live in the so-called rust belt-as some members have enlightened me on, so finding a 42 year old car in this shape is becoming a rarity!

Maybe...I could put my car into the collection as well...I suppose you could always build a bunk in the loft with a tv and beer fridge? Would be a fun job, doing things I like to do.

70 Cutlass painted Update

Painted the original color (45) next is detailing. Found green, cloth, bucket seats and they are in such good shape I think I will not recover them. Mechanically the car is good and she's all original (except for buckets).

Ted, that's a wonderful transformation! Are you putting the vinyl back on? Just a few trim pieces to go on the outside. Some SSII or SSIII wheels on that baby will make it look "Supreme"

Funny you should say that, I went to court once for driving my 68 2+2 Pontiac rag top after the buckets had been stolen. The coppers caught me sitting on a milk crate. That was over 30 years ago, and I'm a lttle sharper now (not much though).

Continuing paint saga

This car has been painted twice at my shop by painting buddies. The prep work was done by myself and a guy that works for me.NONE of us can paint
I was never really happy the way it turned out, the car deserves better
End result, is I drove it to a paint shop today to get sprayed professionally. He complemented us on our prep work, but not on our paint job
It should be done by the end of the week, complete with new tires and rims-I will post pics then....

Wow! 3 paint jobs in 1 year? You must really love that car. Wouldn't it have cleaned up with some 2000 wet/dry and then fine polishing?

Allan, I love ALL my cars, what is that disease, OCD!?
1st paint-misses, bugs, drips etc. Got to work, prepped again
2nd paint-forgot thinner-luckily he did not apply clear
3rd paint-told the painter that the sanding job we did was not the final sand!He painted anyway with 2coates of base and 2 coats of clear!.Could see our sanding marks everywhere! And, he had wiped a portion of the hood with gun cleaner, and you could see where he had done so. Runs, drips, misses etc.

Any grit sandpaper could not have fixed. The funny thing was the door jams came out perfectly!
The car is now where it should be, getting the paint it deserves!

Talking

Here's a paint job for you. My 64 Skylark (sorry). It's never been painted since it left the factory. Looks like hell. I've had so many cars painted over the years, I've had it. This one I'm going to leave half paint and half primer. Just touch up the rust. It really horrifies people. I tell them I can always make it look nice like theirs, but they can never go back to original !!

Oh well, so goes another set of original Olds rims and hubcaps to be set aside for something more interesting . Aftermarket or Olds SSI/II/III?

Hey Joe,
This should cheer you up. I can't find the correct rims for my 64 Skylark, and none of the hubcaps fit, so I'm going to put on the set of 69 Olds 14 X 7 rally wheels with bolt-on center caps. I tried to sell them for $100 and nobody would buy them. Got offered $60 but declined. Even have all the rings and trim bits. Just missing three center caps. Maybe I can slowly turn the car into an Olds !!

Cool. Any way you can plop a 326 in there too? Then you'd satisfy just about everyone at a BOP show ...if you can find one.

Sammy, it looks like your Supreme is Aspen Green; interesting color especially when newly-painted. I had a '70 'S' with original Aspen Green paint and wasn't all that attractive since the paint was pretty faded.

Actually, I'm thinking of using the frame from my 65 Olds F85, and boxing it. I have to change the frame anyway, as it's rotten, and there's no motor. Maybe an Olds 425 just for fun.

Never fear, the originals are staying!I have a set of III's that I will try, but have a feeling the old discs and rims will be put back on since the car is so original(except for front buckets)
I try to maintain the originality of these cars as much as possible and this one is no exception

Looks great Ted. Why even the frame and exhaust are green!! I know - you'll get around to it. Everything in good time. I think that with some SSIIIs on there that car would show even better. You're going to have an awesomer collection.

[ no front seats or front seatbelts! He had sold them for 250$ the day before!

Hey Sammy,
Just re-reading the thread and remembered something. Years ago I bought a 71 442 off the original owner for $500 because someone stole the buckets out of it. I was so pleased with my scoop. Car only had 60,000 original miles on it. Before I was finished gloating, my wife at the time, and I, split up, and I had to sell it to a guy for $900 just because I had to travel light. Being homeless will do that to a guy. Anyway, the guy I sold it to, sold the complete front end off it for $1600 and he parted it out. Just about made me ill. The late eighties was a tough time for twenty year old cars.
I try not to get too emotionally attached to my rockets now.

That was from paint no 2!Wouldn't you figure, the thing that bugs me is when paint gets on the frame and exhaust, and Allan picked them out!
Apparently hydraulic fluid will get rid of it?.....

That is exactly what would have happened to this cutlass. The 80's were rough for these cars, which makes saving the ones that survived mandatory
Too late for me, I have acquired OCD !My wife asked if I was going to sell a car or two.I looked at her, smiled and went outside! I think she understands

Sorry Ted , that's one of the things I just 'notice'. Don't know if hyd fluid works on that or not? For the frame I'd just rough it up and spray it down with chassis black. On the exhaust, I'd just sand it down by hand to base metal, or rough it up and paint it with VHT metal cast like for disc brakes and exhaust manifolds. See, I need to be there overseeing that collection. How would you explain that to your wife??
