Is This Bumper Worth It ?

I received a FREE 71 CS rear bumper , but I don't think it's worth putting on my car now that I've had a good look at it . Here are some photos of the one on my car , and some pics of the FREE one ....

The bumper that is ON my car seems to be bent in and up ... I may even be able to pound the dent out with a sledge , and hang on to the other one to use as a core .

The Free Bumper

This one 71 tailight will be up for grabs . The other ones were no good ( cracked and broke ) , and the broken ones were missing the inner lense portion of the tailights also .

Well if anything at all , these tailight sockets are in better shape then the ones on my car . I hope this will take care of my blinker / headlight issues .

and here's the bumper in question . It looks good in the picture from this distance ....

Here's some of the ugly ... The guy I got this bumper from put this black tar crap all over the back of the bumper , making it impossible to remove anything . While I was trying to remove one of the bumper brace bolts , it started spinning and messed things up in a hurry ... also notice the chrome peeling of too ....

There were rust holes here , so my initial idea was to fill them , and spray on some rattle can chrome paint there , and some of the other areas where the peeling is taking place ....

It is a better core than the one on the car.

More

Here's the other side that I had to fill a dent in the worst place possible of course ....

If you look closely above the chrome buttons , you can see the bumper dented where the bumper brace bolts up in back . I'm not sure if this bumper would even align properly because of this ....

The area where the chrome button spun is also dented in . There are other dents I didn't take pictures of that also need to be straightened out besides these issues ...

agreed .... my intentions at first was to put this bumper on my car as is , but now I'm not so sure . I certainly can not afford to have either one fixed and re-chromed .

The minor dents can be hammered with a 2x4 from the back side. It can be straightened. The chrome can be cleaned up with an SOS pad and water, or some fine steel wool with soap and water. You'll be surprised at how it will turn out.

Yeah I used a SOS pad to clean it up , and it worked well . To bad there is a lot of chrome peeling on the bumper . This looks like a classic case of a crappy chrome job .

The more I look at the bumper on my car , the more it seems to be an easier repair . I believe I was wrong about it being all bent up . I think that one dent in the middle gives it that appearance . It looks as though someone moved the adjustment all the way down , so the bumper would not hit the trunk lid . I'm going to work on putting the tailight sockets from the other bumper on today , and I may go as far as taking it off and pounding the dent out . I may have to take the bumper off in order to put the tailight assemblies on anyhow .
