Battery Choices

My Battery is headed south, and am having no luck finding a replacement. 62 olds super 88. Local auto parts store doesn't even list it. The one that is in it doesn't fit either as it has a piece of plywood under it, to raise it up a bit because it is to wide to fit the tray. Does anyone know what battery actually fit in the tray?

Thanks

1954-64 12v full-size Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs use a Group 60K battery which is obsolete. You can get reproduction 60Ks but $$$.

https:/www.batterycentralmall.com/Batteries/TurboStart/Script/S60K_O.html

This shows the 60K's dimensions. I'm told there are some Japanese car batteries that are close in size to the 60k.

Using a different size battery in pre-62 cars is easier than 63-64 where the battery tray stamping in the radiator support is made to the exact footprint of a 60K.

According to AutoZone, the group size for your car is a 27. I would check it out.

Group 27 is 5/8" wider and 3/4" shorter than a 60K. Check your battery tray size to see if it can accommodate the 27, which is widely available.

Absolutely wrong. 27 or 27F are too wide to fit in the 54-64 battery trays.

AZ and others also claim 65-70 88/98/Toronado use a Group 24. Those years use a Group 27 except for 65-66 Jetstar 88 which uses a 24 and also has a 330, not a 425/455 with a ton of electrical accessory load.

Always take battery catalog info for older cars with a grain of salt. It's wrong way more often than it's right.

Battery Central can have your battery made. It will come with one or two AGMs inside a reproduction cosmetic case. Generally, they are made to order with none in stock. Delivery is running a couple of months after the date of payment. The factory was idled because they let their materials get low during the pandemic and ran out of the sealer used to attach the cosmetic top to the case. If you call, have the maximum dimensions for the tray and the height of battery needed in front of you. My guess is $325 delivered on the cost which is not as bad as your first reaction. My last one, a 30H, lasted over 15 years. For long term owners, the cost per year is in the ballpark with many store bought batteries.

If its not a factory correct restoration maybe just swap the tray toaccept the more commonly availible group 27 battery?

Not 100% sure on a 62. I know you can't do that on a 64 because of the way the battery tray is made in the core support.

Since most of those are rusted out anyway, could probably cut and fabricate a tray for a 27.😜

Got me thinking there. Can probably make a tray for the 27 that will fit over the original, that will secure the battery. Just don't like the piece of plywood in there.

$379.00 and I suspect shipping to Canada is extra.
