Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2015

Anyone know what the green '70 442 convertible went for? Was it over a 100k? I don't like the color, but the car looks good in the pics. Ron Pratte's collection is amazing.

Unhappy Not on Speed Vision

I am not sure how the rest of you guys feel, but Speedvision not covering the Auction is disappointing. It says Discovery Channel would cover part of it but I have yet to see any coverage.

In general all of the Olds to cross the block have gone way above the historical numbers. The convertible 442s especially are going for between $80-110k!

BJ does seem to draw the big spenders while Mecum is more of a bargain.

Really? Way above?

The 67 442 post coupe sold for $20500 & the 70 W-31 brought just under $23K. Both cars were steals for the new owners.

I would not say a steal om either. Im here all week and have looked at all the olds cars more than a few times each. Both of these steals were marginal at best. The w-31 had no forms of documents that I could see, had a fresh un wet sanded finish that was rough around the edges and had horrible bumpers on it that were peeling like a bad sunburn. Hood was never open before selling either. The 67 had a good look but when side lower moldings are held on with huge hardware store phillips screws, that screams good enough for the auction to me. In fact other than vin#'s I have not seen one olds 442 that had any documents displayed ie: window sticker, broadcast, buidsheet etc etc. THE nicest olds I saw was a 68 w-30 maroon 4 speed. While it did not have papers, the resto was just superb. Hammered around 55,000 wed eve with kind of an empty crowd. Last eve a red 72 442 6 speed whatever car went through for 50!!!! I would have pegged it for about 20,000 in a private sale. It was such an array of bad things. I don't know where to start. A v code vin but that was it. Just goes to show that this is the place to do well even on a car guys want to dump out on. Now all of this is just what I saw and an opinion. It tends to clear up what is seen on tv.

The Olds offering at BJ this year is not very impressive. Lots of cobbled up cars clearly not prepped by people with knowledge of these cars. Usually there is one or two nice Oldsmobiles there that impress me, but not this year.

The 68 was nice, and there is a 69 H/O (unrestored) that's nice, but lots of clonage, verts with wings, backwards valve covers.

There is also an undocumented W30 being sold by Alice Cooper that would be cool to get a hold of and restore if you could track him down privately and not pay auction prices for.....

The triple black Thornton 70 drop top is probably the "nicest" Olds here this year.

Watched a little of it last night down at my favorite Italian joint. Owner is a car guy so he and I sat there discussing B-J while we chowed down on some Arrabiata. One thing I noticed was Velocity's HORRIBLE closed-captioning (restaurant, CC a necessity). I don't expect a lot of accuracy by the B-J commentators but add mangled-English CC to it and it was just plumb difficult. The money that auction attracts, seems the closed-captioning could have been better.

The price on the '68 442 convertible was surprising, they said it was restored in Scottsdale...

An identical car to this sold about 4 years ago at BJ for around $110k. I wonder is this is the same car. There's no logical reason why that car sold for $190k. There's no reason why it would have sold for more than $50k. It looks like it should have a transfer case on it

Did anyone get a look in person at Alice Coopers car? Price seemed reasonable at $35K but after the buyers added premium maybe it was overpaid for? What was the condition of the car? Thanks

The Alice Cooper car was a decent driver that could've been left as it was and enjoyed (especially knowing it was Coopers personal car), but needed restored to be nice. It wasn't all cobbled up like most of the a-body Olds cars we saw this week. Didn't see any paperwork but it look like an honest solid car.

Thanks, appreciate that. He had a decent collection, did you hear if he was just turning it over, or done with cars?

We bought the car. No A/C. Window is a little sketchy. Paint not the best. Fair car. We got offers on it before we left the lot. eight thumbs up on the way home on the interstate.

I have been going to both for years (actually 10 now, feel old). Mecum is a bit more Wholesale, a lot of dealers buying cars that end up on their lots. B-J is definitely Retail. Some cars show up in dealerships, but hard to fit a margin in on a future sale with the prices there. A lot of restorers have deals with B-J to feed them cars.

Yeah, seems like its one big commercial venture now. I have heard rumors of shills in the audience driving the prices up. Seems a "average joe" guy needs to be pretty sharp to uncover a deal there now.

The best way to get a deal at B-J is know what it is that you are willing to spend as a maximum, prepare to lose on lots of cars, and hopefully get lucky enough that the car you want is going off early in the day or if/when it is raining...that is when the tent is empty and it is possible to be one of only a very few number of bidders.

I have a friend that got an outstanding GTO that way. It was raining, it was early in the day on a Thursday, it was cold...seemed like no one there but us.

Do not know if this has been mentioned in this thread, but I was appalled and disgusted with the coverage provided on the Discovery channel (NOTE-Discovery, not Velocity). It would show 2 cars going across the block then run 6-to-8 commercials. The coverage was nothing more than a platform to present ads!

And while I am at it, B-J is now an authority on car wax?

Am I the only one who smiled a whole lot when the Gas Monkey C-10 went for as little as it did?

Actually I got a big laugh on Sunday when the guy from Overhaulin told the guy from Gas Monkey "I see you're holding to your strict regimen of 1.75 Miller Lites per hour". Man what a zinger that was. The look on his face after hearing that was priceless

Wonder how much Thorton's would charge to redo a 442 complete everything to that quality????

This is true. My one experience at B-J had me pursuing a nice Grotto Blue '68 Z/28. Bidding stalled out at $42K, and I detected a bargain (this was in 2007) and so picked up the bid. I was within seconds of the hammer dropping when somebody topped me, and all of a sudden, the thing took off! It ended up going for somewhere in the mid 70s, and the bidder's assistant (yeah, that cute one who gets all the camera time) couldn't understand why I just walked away.

I guess they're used to people just paying whatever it takes. Me, I only like to buy if I think I'm getting a bargain.

I quit going when the Chevelle sold for a bit over a "cool mil". I'm in the REAL car auction business everyday, and B-J has very little in common with wholesale-dealer-only auctions. They do consign some good cars, but if you review the total results IMO there are are more "normal" cars than "movie stars". I've said it for years and this is in no way a slam.....PT Barnum has nothing in Craig Jackson; one of the best promotors I've ever seen.

Plus what everybody said previously .

I spent 8 of the 11 days there , and " everyone's " . observations are spot on . My tutorial evening was with " jstrits " looking at one of the most obvious examples of questionable over restoration . Lot # 1062 , 1968 Olds Cutlass 442 , triple black , 4 spd .. and Somebody took the opportunity to pay $ 209 , 000 for ! WOW .
Incorrect replacement floor pan plugs ( upside down ) , 50 % of the under hood hardware plated silver , shiny black painted windshield washer reservoir , and , an Optima Battery . The first time I looked at it , all of the
"Bling " blended in ... And yes , it did look like it should have had a transfer case under it .. Typical Mike Joy response " It was restored to taste " .
Strits also is correct in assessing that there is virtually ZERO real paperwork on virtually all of these cars , and you rarely get to speak to the actual builder .. Lots of eye candy on overcooked sign boards .
For a " Show " however , this is a tough show to beat . I met some very cool people around the cars . They just were not 442 people .
Talked with Galen Govier one evening about the State of the MOPAR values . And I participated in an Open House @ Kevin Marti's Ford operation . Both good people .
Everyone I was around had a blast , with proper preparation you can learn volumes about how NOT to place a car , AND how to make some of the magic work . Good observations by everyone...
Cheers , JT

I chatted up Galen as well. He remembered my Hemi Charger, who restored it, the VIN and who paid for the restoration.

He gets knocked in the Mopar world for slow response on things, but he certainly knows what he is talking about.

I used to watch Fast and Loud when it first came out but got sick of the two top guys (the owner and the head mechanic, Aaron, I think) because these two guys are so childish and immature I got sick of watching them. Most of the cars that Gas Monkey builds don't appeal at all to me. I prefer as stock and original as possible, not pimped out!

I fail to understand how or why Barrett Jackson does so well. To me they have absolutely ruined the hobby by inflating or over emphasizing the cars they put on stage! I should not have to spend 80-100k for a real deal W-30 4 speed 442 ever! Cars should not cost more than my house!

Lots of places. Check out the prices in suburbs near Dallas, Detroit or Cleveland. And once you do the funds conversion there are lots of small towns across Canada that have viable places available for less than $100K US.

My rental property here in Barre,Vt is assessed at $67,000! Even if I sold it now I couldn't get 100k for it! I lived in that house for 8 years and to me there is no car including collector/musclecars that are worth 100K! Now it might be a bit different if there were only a few built ever or it was owned by Carroll Shelby or something like that but to me these Auction houses have hurt the people that keep this hobby alive! I have a Cutlass in my garage, not a 442!
