Anyone been following the Barrett Jackson auction at Scottsdale ? I see some nice 442’s/W-30’s on the docket, including a ‘70 in red and another in gold. Also a ‘70 W-31 that looks a lot like the car that just sold at Mecum Kissimmee.
Yea, my brother is there now, he is keeping me posted on the sale of the red w30.. I believe it to be a first rate restoration on a highly documented numbers matching car. Should hit some big dollars.
I've been "spoiled" by the pics on BAT auctions...but I realize that's b/c the pics ARE the auction on BAT whereas you really have to just go to the other auctions (Scottsdale, etc) to see the details on the cars.
I have caught a couple of nights of B.J. I am always in awe of the high hammer price some of those vehicles get however that being said I have seen what I would consider some real bargains cross the block also !!
cars where you know the investment was much greater than auction price yield. I live in Peoria Az about15- 20 miles from Scottsdale and have attended the event a few times it is a experience !!! something for everyone for me its a love hate relationship, love all the great cars, hate that I cant have them !! The estimated 2000 vehicles this year.
Yeah, I’ve been keeping an eye on it! The ‘70 442’s look amazing, especially the W-30’s. That ‘70 W-31 is definitely drawing some attention—curious to see how it compares to the Mecum sale. Should be some exciting bids!
That 70 is interesting. I am interested in the lineage of the Super Stock wheels, if you'll indulge me.
The first SSI had no trim ring and was drum brake only and 14x6 and ended a short way into the 68 model year. The second SSI was made in 1969 and was 14x6, all chrome, and could do disc brakes. That appears to be upon what this car sits. The third SSI was 14x7, trim ring, disc brakes, and 1970. There was a brief run in 1971 of a fourth SSI that was 14x7, all chrome, and disc brakes. The SSI was not available in 72, I believe.
So, being on disc brakes, being all chrome, this is obviously either the 69 or the 71 wheel, and, judging by the hoop in the pictures, it is the 69 14x6 all chrome, disc compatible SSI.
These were made in 1969 calendar year, this is a early production 1970 W-30 made in that year. The SPECS is no help as they just kept the option code the same, but it looks like, assuming these are the original rims, that the 1969 all chrome SSI could be on an early 1970 car. Very interesting, and preferable.
At the risk of getting mauled for this I will help everyone understand this car. The builder built it for resale at Barrett Jackson period while it is an original well documented 70 W30 4 speed car it was done with gloss finishes and several non factory correct finishes on hardware. I would say he did what he intended to do by hitting out of the park with price.
The buyers there are not purists they like shiny well done cars no different resto mods being done with lots of chrome. This car was well done with all the correct parts where they were supposed to be, all date coded to the car but his goal was maximum dollars. I spent plenty of time looking at the car and the builder was at my house yesterday so I know the story behind the build. It wasn't built for purists.
The 14x7 wheels were wheel vintiques aftermarket wheels with Coker reproduction Wide Ovals radials just like I had on my triple black 442 convert.
