Too bad the author and readers (judging by the comments) don't seem to realize that "4 speed" was only part of the "442" naming process in 1964. In the first paragragh, the author postulates that most people probably think "442" means "442 cubic inches" (actually a pretty good guess if you ever had anyone come up and ask about your car). Then goes on to say that "these cars actually had an even bigger 455". Good probability the author does not know that in the only year (1964) that "442" meant "4 barrel - 4 speed - dual exhaust" the car actually had a 330. It's possible that he knows this and the final edit was just to clunky for a full explanation, but if your are going to complain about the naming process of car maybe you should fully expain the name to begin with. To me the article simply helps to spread the myth that any 442 (other than 1964) with an auto trans must be a fake because "everyone knows 442 means 4 barrel 4 speed dual exhaust" (another thing that most who come up to ask about a car will likely mention).
