Any GM 2.2 engine experts in readerland??

Last year my son bought a 97 S-10 with the rompin stompin 2.2 engine and a 5 speed. The engine started smoking and making bad sounds, it locked up on the drive home. So the search started for a replacement engine.

Over the weekend, I found what is quite possibly the most rusted 99 S-10 anywhere. But it runs well, and was cheap. I figured swap engines, scrap the rest and basically break even.

The problem started once the were side by side. The 99 engine looked very different than the 97. Now I’m wondering if my great deal resulted in little more than lockjaw on wheels.

Are the engine interchangeably? I don’t mo d swapping intakes, exhaust and other parts. I suppose it would have been better to check before buying, but as I mentioned the truck was cheap and runs wwll

I'm not familar with that engine. I did do a google ask,(AI overview) and there are many differences. Can you overcome this swap? I don't know, but according to that search it sounds possible but it might not be worth the time and effort. I had no idea. I like those trucks.

The original motor probably just needs a head gasket. That's a given with the 2.2.

You're big issue will be with the crank sensor interchange. The rest will swap between the motors.

Something broke in the engine, it was making bad sounds before it locked up. This is without a doubt more serious than a head gasket.

Right on. I just threw it out there since lots would hydrolock and then folks thought they were seized. I definitely pulled the plugs on a bunch, drained the cylinders and then did the head gaskets. They used that motor in everything back in the day...

Great big steaming piles of horse excrement!!

It appears the tone wheel and crank sensors are different between the 97-99 engines. There are other differences, but supposedly that’s the big hang up. I guess I should have done a little research before buying it.

I remember that being an issue with getting junkyard motors. There were so many variations of the 2.2 its ridiculous.

Welp you have the whole truck. I'm sure you're clever enough to swap the motor along with the harness and ECM. You haves all you need in your driveway already!
