Another 66 w-30?
Looking thru, but didn't buy, an issue of car &driver,"classic". Looked like a quarterly publication. Anyway, in the back is a section titled "barn finds". Showing a pic of a 66 442, pretty rough, no engine/trans, but you can see the ducts and red fenderwells. Caption says the car was found in 09, in Minn., supposed to be 1 of the 54. Anyone have any more info?

That's the one. Sorry about the wheelwells, the pic was just a little bigger than the ones you posted, and it was a quick glimpse/read.

The car needs to be re-bodied but I inspected it too and it is one of the 54. The rust is extreme, no floor and not much trunk floor either. Being from Minnesota, it may have come from Holiday Olds in Minneapolis. They had 12 of the 54.

?
i wonder where you draw the line re: the restored car being a real W30 if virtually nothing from the factory will remain.
If the guy spends a fortune to build around the VIN and cowl tags....what does he truly have when the resto is finished ?

First be honest about the history of the car and its repairs.
Second, everything except VIN and cowl tags was available from GMPD, even the body shell (group 10.001)
Third, the correctly numbered shroud is either with the car, or the restoration will be imperfect

I do think about the whole rebody thing, mixed thoughts, there was a discusssion awhile back here on the same subject, I mean on one hand you buy a vin off evilbay, buy a body from dyncorn, marry the two and next you have a zl-1 69 camaro with date correct engine and tranny ( not original) on the other hand you have a zl-1, body is absolutely shot rotted to the antennae tip but all the original equipment is there, your going to replace all the sheetmetal anyway isn't the dyncorn deal better?

What does any expert see here or after direct examination of the car that confirms it as 'one of 54' and not a period, well done TP car? I'll assume for the thread the battery cabling and mounting, parking lights and other expected details are in place. Yes, remnants of old OAI hoses and one hose bracket (seen) and pod tach holes are compelling, but I see nothing else in the images or the previous ebay sales confirming the 1/54 assertion. Rund calls for honesty, very well, but if it had or has a known history, no need for honesty. Let's face it, it's unrealistic to expect compelling honesty from strangers on a expensive muscle car sale. The ONLY relevant matter is what is seen, and what I see here is no engine, no shroud, no paperwork, no transmission, just another 5V shell with some exciting details.
Factoid: four numbered 3X2 shrouds from dead storage have traded hands in last two years (EDIT - that I know of). CW

Was that W-30 for sale for $2000 at the Nationals?

There are other parts as well, but Curt and I don't publicize the information since it would make it easier to fake a car. The problem with extensive parts changing, including re-bodying, is that very few people know all the details involved in making a truly correct build. As a result, restoring a car generally wipes the slate clean and so many nice details about how the factory built them are lost.

I know some numbered shrouds have changed hands, but Curt keeps the information so when it magically appears later, we know what happened. Dana Page's white W30 was badly rusted and he packed it in the late 70s after removing key parts. It has magically been "restored" but I copied the cowl tag and inspected the car at the OCA Nationals back then, and unfortunately it now has some non-authentic options/lack thereof.

Thank you Rund and TK. I don't know enough about these cars to be dangerous. I know about the obvious stuff, but what's underneath that "authenticates" a 66 w-30, is what eludes me. I was wondering how 1 authenticated one. I also appreciate you guys keeping the secrets, secret.

NO!! It was NOT for Sale at OCA! Especially not for $2000.00. Jeff had over $10K invested by the time he got it back home to Ct from MN!! And besides if it were for sale for $2K, RUND would have it sittin in HIS garage today!!! LOL!! "say it aint so, Joe"??
