Of all the problems with EV charging stations...

...who'd a thought that this would be one of them?

When you think about it, people waiting for their EV to charge are basically stuck there until the car is charged up. That could take hours I presume. Until then, you're kind of at the mercy of the environment around you. If you're at a well-lit "fueling station," or perhaps truck stop, probably not an issue. But if it's in an isolated area, who knows.

Just another of the 10 gazillion reasons I would rather just stop buying cars if my only choice was an electric one.

Also, the people who use EVs are typically well off, unarmed, and soft. You try to hold up a country boy and he will mess you up or die trying, whereas these guys probably wouldn't even defend their wife's honor.

I've refueled one handed while holding a big .45 before in plain view. Not often, and not proud of it, but I have had to do it a couple times.

EV's aren't ideal for every situation e.g., continual long trips. Charging at a public supercharger takes about 30 minutes for a couple hundred miles and the cost is about equal to gasoline. If you travel locally you can charge at home and never visit a gas station, no oil changes and so on. The at home cost for many is about 1/3 the cost of gasoline.

Many are concerned about fire, supposedly fires are more common on petro fueled vehicles than EV.

As a taxpayer, I would just like to quit subsidizing these damn things with tax credits. Then they get a further subsidy by driving on roads and not paying any tax to maintain them. Ev's are okay, just let the market do its thing.

First as an happy EV and Hot Rod owner. It takes 25 minutes to fully charge. From 5 miles left to 290 miles. Just enough time for bathroom break and another cup of coffee. Never seen any ladies of the night.

As I drove up and down east coast interstates for business. Included IS 80 in PA & Ohio For many years in my Cutlass, mostly at night. As I sat in the car for some food and drink. Almost every truck shop and every McDonalds that had parking for trucks. Cars with hookers would drive up to the trucks. And go from truck to truck.

The Sun, I would not call an newspaper! But nut jobs, carp, cheap sensationalism to sell papers!

Glenn,

When I paid my TX license fee this month, I noticed that EVs require an extra $400 initial registration fee and $200 per year after that. This is to make up for loss of gasoline tax revenue.

But you're correct when it comes to Los Federales.

This makes one huge assumption, and that is that you have a garage or similar place to put the charger. Some huge number of Americans do not have a garage or live in an apartment building and thus have no place for a charger. For these people, it can't be assumed that they can simply charge at home. Maybe apartment complexes will one day have an EV charger in their parking lots for every apartment, but I would think that this is far in the future.

But EV fires are much more dangerous because they are virtually impossible to put out. The battery materials simply reignite the way those can't-be-blown-out birthday candles do. Periodically you read about EV manufacturers discovering a defect and advising that owners park their cars outside until repaired. I'll be damned if I'm going to park my new, $50,000 EV out on the street for someone to run into it.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/lithium...-firefighters/

I'm going to park my new Jaguar out on the street? And they tell you to recharge it out on the street, too. I don't have a charger out on the street. It's in my garage, remember? Oh, that's right, I can't park there!

I've seen many stories about this issue, and I'm guessing that every state will eventually adopt a fee on EVs to make up for the lack of revenue from gasoline taxes. It's how they pay for road maintenance, after all.

Electric Vehicles are trying to be forced on the people. Admit what it takes to build an Electric Vehicle? Admit what happens to an Electric Vehicle after it's crashed and totalled? Oh no. Can't go there.
I have zero problem with anyone that wants one. Just like I shouldn't be judged for using gasoline. There will Never Ever be a day where there are no gas burning vehicles. Never.

Amen. And even with the subsidies, EVs are piling up on dealer lots.

I'm not saying that EVs don't have a place. But they should EARN that place, not be shoved down our throats. And we should not be forced to pay for others to buy them.

Electric vehicles were right there at the beginning of the automobile age along with internal combustion and steam power. All three kinds could have been found on the road in the early years. But internal combustion won out for many reasons, and those same reasons are still true today, 120 years later. I might get an EV as a second vehicle IF I wanted something just for local errands and IF I have a place at home to charge it so I don't have to rely on public chargers. But as my ONLY vehicle? The one I take trips half-way across the country in on vacations? Never. And certainly not if I live in the north, where, in winter, the need to have the heater, defroster, windshield wipers, and headlights (not to mention the radio!) all on at the same time? This sort of usage cuts EV range to the point that they're impractical.

Yes, EVs have a place. But it's a niche. Not mainstream.

Not that Tesla would ever say something is wrong with their EV. But Tesla quietly thicken the steel under the battery pack years ago. Accidents were penetrating the bottom of battery pack. Causing the battery fires.

Some nut job in a Tesla Y tried to kill his family. By driving off a cliff 250 feet. The rescue guys did not think anyone would be alive. As had been the case with other cars going over the same chiff. To their surprise they saw movement in the car. Tesla Y, like mine. People lived and it did not burn. Even the roof had not collapse.

Like guys who rode horses, knock the gas car. Gas car guys knock the EV. One day EV guys will knock Hydro power cars. And so on........

Fire dept now are putting the cars in large garbage dumpsters full of water. Like that ship full of EV that went up in flames.

Tesla plunges 250 ft. off cliff

Lots of misinformation here. I actually went and picked up my 1969 442 in my F150 lightning, and it's night and day better than driving my gas F150, especially with the self driving auto pilot. I can drive all day and not fatigue. Topping off does take 30 minutes, but it's 30 minutes I can leave the truck charging, unlike waiting at a gas station for the pump to stop. I usually use the bathroom, get something to eat and it's done charging before I finish my meal. And price... filling up my F150 with gas was $130 per tank, and got 13mpg. This costs me about $30 to fill up on a fast charger. and only $5 at home, but usually it's free. And top ups occur every 280-300 miles, so about 4 hours or so. I can't sit still that long, so I'm usually stopping for the bathroom anyway and get a charge. There are also alot of free charging while traveling. This never happens with gas. Sorry, I love my olds, but I couldn't let you guys work with faulty info about ev's either.

My charger is outside of my house, on my wall.

My apologies, that's an exaggeration on my part. Just the fact that it's generally poor for road tripping isn't true. I like mine more than my gas truck for road trips.

No problem, we are good. What is the range on the Lightning?

My references are to a single motor Tesla Model 3. 200 miles is about as far as I'm comfortable going between charges but you cannot always go the 200 miles as you may have to charge sooner to make it to the next charger.

How much of our world is destroyed to build an Electric Vehicle (EV for those that can't spell) we really did use to use words. Crazy huh?

This forced Electric Vehicle bullshit is just that. Bullshit. I can appreciate the technical side. To say building these cars is better for the world? Bullshit

Are you serious? ... Wow comical. Who is mining what is needed for Electric Vehicle's?? Raping the planet to produce them. Can't even ask the toxic bullshit after an Electric Vehicle is totalled.

Please explain to me how I am wrong.

So hey. Good forum for this discussion.

Do you seriously think that what it takes to produce an electric vehicle causes less harm to this planet than fossil fuels?

I designed fire sprinkler systems and had my guys install. For many USGS (United States Geological Survey)buildings expansions. I do a lot of government jobs, even UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria) As a very curious guy. I have talked to a dozen field scientist. All give me the same answer. Freshwater fish all have tumors and harmful chemical in them. From the run off the road and highways. It is what it is! How many cars and truck drip oil alone? And whatever else comes out of the tail pipe. Where do you think its going? Bottom fish are the worst I was told. As the heavy chemicals go to the bottom.

I'm not getting into what it takes to make them or dispose of them.
I just don't get the purpose of them.
(other than being hella-fast and probably fun)

16.82% of the US's CO2 emissions come from light duty vehicles.
60% of those new EV's will be charged from electric plants that STILL USE fossil fuels.

So why is anyone excited about the environmental impact these might have?
Why aren't we going after the other 83% of the CO2 emitters?

You don't keep the ship afloat by patching the smallest holes first.

And if anyone doubts the #'s....
