Aircond Dramas

Can anyone help, My 59 98 airconditioner is becoming an expensive folly.
After the death of 2 new C6 compressors we have come to the conclusion that they are oil starved.
Does anyone know how much oil should be in the system and the correct charge for 134A ?
The only original parts are the condensor and evaporator the rest is new.

According to the chassis manual, there should be thirteen ounces of Frigidaire 525 viscosity oil in the system...page 14-28....this manual should be available to view @ wild about cars dot com...

Thank you!! It seems it is well short of oil, by about 10 oz or 300ml!

No expert on 59' A/C systems, but do know a lot about A/C in general. If going to R-134A refrigerant, you'll need a polyester based syn oil, rather than the mineral based oil originally used with R-12 refrigerant. Not sure of 59's, but modern cars list the the refrigerant charge on the compressor sticker, and you're generally wanting 80% charge of R-134A vs the listed R-12. Also, You'll probably be finding your factory condenser coil a bit undersized, when running R-134A. Not sure of your bypass valve arrangement, but R-134A operating pressures are a bit different. Probably, best off sticking with R-12.

I have fitted a new AC Delco A6 compressor, adjustable thermostat and reciever drier with low pressure switch also a new TX Valve. The old hot gas bypass system is now gone and all new lines made ( using the original copper ones ).
Seems the original condenser and evaporator are a limiting factor , but rego laws here do not allow me to modify the car , so they remain.
The compressor states 595(?) mineral oil, but has failed and sounds like its full of rocks.
Do you think the R - 134A is breaking down the oil?

The mineral oil is likely your problem, as tends to sludge up in R134A systems. Most retrofits from R-12, flush the mineral oil out, and replace it with PAG 150 viscosity syn oil. I'd check with an A/C shop in your area, and see what they recommend as a replacement. Another thing you can do during a rechage, is give the system a UV dye shot, as easy to spot a leak later, by scanning around with a UV trace light.
