After 18 years...

I had a decision to make. Sell my 72 Cutlass S with 41k miles on it or get to work on it. I got to work. I'm so glad I did.

Thank you! I received some great info on here about picking the proper tire sizes and saw some great pics. Dual exhaust is next.

Very nice looking car! What the heck? Is that a block heater cord I see sticking out the RF grill?

So what's the story on the car - it's not often you see one with only 41K miles, or has it turned over once. I sure wish they had gone over to 6 digit odometers a lot sooner.

Curious

Your car has an excellent stance. Torque Thrust rims look good on all Oldsmobiles. What size rims & tires are those?

good looking car and rims. Glad to hear you didn't have to get rid of it.

My mother's next door neighbor passed away and left her the car. My mom called and asked if I wanted it. I thought she was referring to the lady's 1976 four door Buick. She then told it was the one in the garage and it was from 1972, only had 2 doors, and 38k miles. She had my undivided attention. I about hit the ground when I opened the door and saw what it was. That was 18 or maybe 19 years ago. if I remember right. It cost $1 to change the title. I offered my mom 500 bucks but she wouldn't take it. I think I still owe her the buck for the title change. That's how I cam across it. Just plain good luck.

Yes, Block heater. Good Ol' Wyoming weather. It was on there when I brought it home.

US Mag Standards in silver. 15 x8's(4" BS I think) on the front with the BFGR 225/60 and 15 x 9(5" BS, If I remember right) with 275/60's on the back. A couple of my buddies think it needs to go up a couple in the rear but I like the way it sits as is.

Nice car and great story to go with it! Glad you kept it.
What all did you do to it other than change the wheels?

Absolutely nothing. Still has the original AM radio. Doesn't work. Put a new thermostat and headlight in this weekend. Dual exhaust and a stereo coming next. I'm reluctant to do anything that's permanent or can't be easily undone. I had it out with some friends at a local pub last night and man did it get some attention.

I am sure it did gain plenty of attention - these usually do!
You will want to do some good visual checks on the brake calipers, wheel cyls, brake hoses, coolant hoses, master cyl, and other key rubber parts.
While low mileage, age deteriorates plastic and rubber and after 18 years it is due.

Low mileage originals are hard to find and this one justifies to be 'left alone' with just enough work to keep it safe, drivable, and clean. Like you, I would not make irreversible changes either.

Totally agree. This car is one of four I presently have. I built a pretty nice shop so it's going to get a pretty thorough going over in the next few weeks. I adjusted the brake drums in the front when I put the new rims on. They were spinning a little too freely. Pretty sure it's going to need a new set. I've done them on all my others whether they really need them or not.
I got a factory reproduction dual exhaust ordered today and that will sure help it breathe a little. When I get under there putting it on, I'll be checking it out real close.

And yes, when they sit to long it kills them. I did keep it running all those years and always drove it up and down the driveway to keep things lubed up a bit.

Don't cut the dash for that radio; you're in good shape with the "no permanent changes" mentality. They make ones that will fit, or people will take an original core and re-guts it for you to do whatever you want.

Looks sharp.

Lucky dog! It's in great shape. My first olds was a '72 S that was one owner too. Paint looks really good, enjoy it.

Unless they have been grooved or abnormally worn, they should still be servicable. All of my cars still have their original discs and drums. I would have more faith in the old originals than new chinesium replacements.
If you feel a 'ledge' at the outer inside of the drum, go over it with a straight razor blade. Often it is brake dust and rust buildup and the blade takes it right down.

+1 on the rim/tire coolness! The car looks real sharp, congrats.

Any other info? 350 4bbl? Buckets or bench? Console or column shift? Trans/rear?

Best of luck with it! I think you'll continue to find that keeping her was a wise decision.

Hopefully they are not. It's going to be -18 here tomorrow evening so it's not going to get looked at real soon but I won't be driven either. Great info on inspecting the drums. Thanks.

It's a 350 2 bbl with a split bench, column shift. The dash is in perfect shape. I was smart enough to keep it covered all those years. When it warms up, I'll take some pics and post them up.
Now that I've started doing something with it, I've fell in love with it. It's just such a beautiful design with such nice lines. It just needed some tlc. It would have be a shame to let some one else have all this fun. lol
It also has dealer air. At least that's what we call it. It's a unit that hangs under the dash. Damn thing still seems to work too.

Heavens no. Never cut the dash. I saw the one's that are made and they accept mp3 players and aux phone. These days most of my music is in one or the other so getting one of those will fit right in and hook up to my stuff.
