76 olds cutlass 350 engine
Can someone tell me about this engine code (6764478)?
Also, what should the oil pressure be at normal running (warm) engine idle?
And what should it be at cold start?
Thanks,

But the basic "What is it?" question can be answered by visual inspection:
If it's a small block, it will have a roughly 12" wide intake manifold, if it's a big block, it will be about 14". Any of us would be able to tell from a photo.
Pre-'68 cars have the ID number on the front of the passenger side head, post-'68 on the driver's side pad in the picture, so if he's got the pad, and the number on it confirms it's a '76, it's either a 260 or a 350 if a small block, or a 455 if a big block.
If it's a different year, then other displacements come into question, but confirming it's the original engine by looking at the engine number will provide a great deal of information.
The other important piece of identifying information is the number or letter on the heads, best seen at the front of the driver's side head.
If original, J will be a 455, 8 will be a 350, and 2A or 10 will be a 260.

Yes that is all true, but the casting number of the block will also, quickly, identify what the engine is without all of that. The heads may or may not tell what year it is as the car is 35 years old and who knows what has or hasn't been changed on it. Even if it's the original block the heads could have been swapped out for better ones than the 8's that would have come on it.
All good information Eric.

Agree with all, but they may tell what sort of performance or tuning specifications to expect from the engine (ie: original block with #5 heads), which is the important thing, in my opinion .
Of course, I usually collect far more information than I need about a car, then do nothing with it...
