73 olds floor shifter removal question

I need help in removing my shifter from my 73 olds. It's auto on the floor. I think there is a pin that holds the handle in place but I'm not sure. Iv'e looked for a diagram but so far no luck. Can someone help me on this please. I need to remove the console so I can replace the carpet

Have you unscrewed the shifter ****? Once console retaining bolts are removed, lift and rotate the console approx. 90 degrees and it should come up off the shifter. Then, you can unbolt the shifter as an ***'y from the floor if you want.

Thanks for replying. I did unscrew the shifter **** and thought about just taking the console retaining bolts out doing like you said but I'm also having a hard time trying to locate them . As you can see I'm new to this. But for some reason it seems like I had read on this site a year or 2 back about how to remove the T handle after removing the shifter ****.

Thanks

The bolts that hold the console down are under the inside of the storage compartment in the armrest and inside the front storage compartment. You need to remove the rear one to get to the bolts to remove them.

Thank you Joe. You wouldn't by chance have a picture of that? That's what I was trying to remove. Do you have to pull up on the T handle first and hold and then knock the pin out?

If you just want to remove the shifter and console to replace the carpet then there is no reason to disassemble the shifter.

Thanks Randy. That's true but it would be nice to know how if I ever needed to. I will be taking to console bolts out and hopefully have the carpet in by the weekend. Again thanks everyone for the help.

Yes...the T-handle needs to be lifted to access the pin. As stated, I wouldn't bother with it...just remove the shifter as an ***'y. once the console is removed.

The T-handle does not need to be lifted. Lifting it is what pulls the inner rod beyond the stops on the ratchet. The split pin is just below where your fingers would be when you lift. Punch it out about 1/8 inch from either side and pull it out with needle nose. It won't come out easy, you'll have to work at it but it does come out

Waiting for the weekend. It's been a long work week. By the time I get home it's already getting dark.

The only way that pin is accessible is if the T-handle is lifted and you position the shifter in one of two spots on the ratchet where the handle stays up. Those are between Park and Reverse and Low gear. Again, it just isn't worth the effort to do this while it's on the car.
