There is a nice white V code ‘72 442 convertible on ebay now, I did not see a 72 W30 - can you post a link

EDIT: It’s a V code not a U.
V code is factory big block 4 speed.
U is factory big block automatic, designated in VIN, for 1972.

I ASSUME the OP is talking about this one. Seller claims it's an "X" VIN.

Yeah, probably is the one. Nice car and he will sell it outright for 65K. I'd imagine there will be a protection bid to hurtle over to win the auction...

It's currently $25K with no reserve. $65K is above market for a 72 - most struggle to reach $35K. Given that they are virtually identical to the 71s, plus they have the code right in the VIN, I've never been able to understand why the 72s get no love. They are THE Oldsmobile performance bargain, in my opinion.

That’s a nice car and absolutely agree the 72 W30 is an under appreciated value. I always believed the X Vin was such a great validator, however I remember one or two I’ve seen with AC, and thought AC with X vin w30 were mutually exclusive.

Anything can happen once they leave Lansing. Especially with trim / cowl tags and Vin plates being sold on eBay.

Correct. A/C was not available with W30 in the 1972 model year.

Along with blank OW trans tags.

ac was not available on a 72 W-30. Period.

Sure wouldve be nice to walk into a Oldsmobile dealer in 1972 and check the box for AC when ordering a W30 and see what happened. Here is a CO member positive his 72 W30 came with AC. Stranger things have happened.

As we know, the typical reply regarding a 442 optioned with something we all know did not come from Lansing: “it was dealer installed”.

But could it have been factory installed? I suppose we will never know the truth in regards to how our cars exactly rolled off the factory assembly line. We certainly have documentation as to how they should have been built and what options were available / not available. But humans make mistakes, and humans build cars.

The car that is the subject of this thread doesn't have A/C, so I'm not sure how we got to that topic.

Wandering minds. Human nature?

So back to the topic at hand, it’s nice to see the glove box door has “Cutlass” and not “442”

Thanks for all the info , I am concerned that a no reserve auction has a buy it now price added of twice the price at this moment , seems this car will not sell , was very interested , nice car with docs .

There's no BIN either, but you are right, this auction will not result in a car being sold, despite the fact that it's a legitimate, no-reserve auction. This note added by the seller just recently:

First $60,000.00 takes it. Been offered $53,000.00.
He should have taken the $53K...

Today he added:

“Correction have broadcast card which states W-29 peoples, this car is legit with rocket report”

So is it a W 30 or a W 29? Not sure he’s doing himself any favors confusing the situation - because with the X in the vin that should be enough (if the Vin plate is original). And how much credence do other CO members give the rocket report /Steve Minore? I think he well respected and knows his stuff.

72 x

The car was honestly listed on this forum months ago for around 40... nobody paid much attention... Timing, hype, and unfortunately sometimes bs sells these cars.

You may want to reach out to the seller if you havent an already. If this is the same car from New Jersey that Vader posted above, I remember speaking to the seller who is a member on here - it is a great car. If I remember correctly over this past summer the New Jersey seller was asking high 30s or 40, and it doesn’t look like much if any work has been done since, (console maybe) so the seller in Texas may be open to making a few grand - instead of trying to make over 20 grand.

Either do I. Since the thread digressed, factory air was not available in '72 W30 automatic transmissions?
Sorry. I read the link. Kindly disregard my question.
