72 rocker molding
72 rocker molding
This weekend I was at the wrecking yard pulling off rocker molding from a 72 4door but I was told the coupes are longer, so I decided not to get it. Do anyone know if there is some truth to this?
The Cutlass Town Sedan and Cutlass Supreme Hardtop sedan were overall 4" longer than the coupes. Similarly the chassis wheelbase on the coupe was 112" and the sedans were 116". But here's where it gets interesting. The moldings are located in GM Parts Manual Group 8.304 The same moldings are used for all the 71/72 coupes that don't have 442 packages.
The listing shows 71/72 3677 - 87 & 4257 - 67 exc W29 as being the same molding.
The Cutlass (Town Sedan) is coded 3669, and the Cutlass Supreme Hardtop Sedan is coded 4239, yet both have rocker moldings. The Parts catalogue doesn't have a listing for the 3669 or 4239 so in desperation I looked in the 72 Fisher Body Manual. They have a complete diagram of both sedans, but guess what? No rocker trim is indicated on either model. This is really perplexing because the 72 SPECS guide clearly indicates CS models with rocker trim. And since the CS HT sedan shares the same wheelbase as the Cutlass Town Sedan, they should be compatible for this trim. I know the front fenders for all these models are identical, so it comes down to the body measurement to the rear wheel opening.
If I was to take a guess at this based on the lack of available info I'd suggest the rocker trim from a sedan would be longer than the coupes just based on the wheel base difference. If the yard has a no return policy, measure the distance on your rocker and compare it to the measured length at the wreckers. That would be a sure way to determine if it will fit.
Eric Jensen (jensenracing77), Scott Winn (oldspackrat) or John McNeel (2blu442) would likely know for sure - they part out these cars regularly and could measure the trim to find out.
