The gas shooting out of the carb and the weird noise is a no-brainer.

How are you going to get that timing chain and gear off with the fuel pump lever in the way?
I know hindsight is 20-20, like my first sentence above , but you can pull the fuel pump and feel if the chain is loose through the hole.
The trick now is getting the cover and lower seal on without the pan dropped.

Im not sure if I follow you on the cover and lower seal part. The surface appears to be flush and it seems like putting the cover and seals back on should be fairly simple. Am I mistaken?

Wow - that second picture of the chain really shows your problem...
How many miles are on the engine?

Use "The Riight Stuff" the leaks will usually happen at the bottom corners...

Wipe with brake cleaner then denatured alchohol on a clean rag ...

Use a liberal amount and do not finger the ooze ...

If correct the sealer will stick out a little, do not finger smooth the ooze ...

Yeah putting the timing cover was by far the most irritating part when I first did it. The new seal that you put on is pretty thick and gets compressed between the bottom of the cover and the lip of the oil pan. Without taking off the pan, you have to rock, wedge, lever, and curse the cover into place. And just when you think you have it in and try to put the first bolt in, it will spring back out and you have to start all over. When I did it I loosened the two front most oil pan bolts just so it provided a little bit of give. And then use a good strong screwdriver and use it through the cover and into the block and lever the cover down. It is certainly not impossible, just take your time and try not to get to frustrated.

Looks like the set in a 72 Caddy that skipped timing at 120K, shed some of the teeth and was riding on the aluminum. My curent Cutlass is at 79K. Something to do before I pile on too many more miles. Mine Caddy would start then quickly die after it jumped.
