71' cutlass 350 tranny issue

So I was driving down the highway doing about 60 when all of the sudden the car stopped pulling. The engine is running fine but it will not engage in gear. I move the shifter and there is never that jolt you feel when you put it in drive or reverse. Im just wondering what could have caused this. Any thoughts?

Transmission problem - a million possibilities without more info.

First question, though: How's your fluid level?
Low trans fluid is the best-case scenario that could cause this problem.

Okay, well you just eliminated the cheap and easy problem.

Have a look at this thread for some background info, and hopefully some member here will be able to help pick up from there.

Ouch - I am not liking these sudden tranny problems.
Did you recently do ANY work to the tranny or pull the motor?

I was able to get under thecar and shoot a little video of the torque converter in action. Its spinnign but there is a curious clicking noise coming from that area. Does this noise sound familiar to anyone?

This shouldn't cause the no-go problem that you have, but, are you sure your converter nuts are tight? I've heard loose converters, and they usually sound like a rod knocking, but, allowing for acoustics, that sound could be loose nuts, too.

This sound could also be a cracked flywheel, and under load could cause the transmission to not function.

Found out that the pump gear had broken inside the tranny. Had to pay for a rebuild. Anyone in the Dallas area have a kickdown cable that would like to sell? Mine is seized up.

Bummer... Who did you use and were you happy with them?
Did they give you an idea what caused the pump gear to break? Sounds like an uncommon issue.
With all these sudden tranny failures I might decide to rebuild mine out of prevention...

Well... I took it to the Eagle Transmission on Plano rd. and Forest Ln, I am not happy with them. They were supposed to have it done in a day. Tommorow will make a week that my car has been there. I have been there twice to pick it up only to find that it still didnt work properly. I went there yesterday to pick it up and got on the road and the tranny never would come out of first gear.

I do know what caused my problem. I did not mate the torque converter to the tranny properly when I put my engine back in the car. Rookie mistake.

Now I am in need of a kickdown cable. I am trying to find one locally that I can have installed while its still at the shop. Mine is seized up and explains alot about how my car was driving prior to the tranny problem.
