71 442 for sale in classifides

I have not been an Oldsmobile owner for long. And I don't kow alot of the history of the 442, but I was always told that 442 stood for 4 barrel, 4 speed and dual exhaust.
Well I was just looking at a 71 for sale in the classifieds with an automatic with the center console
Whats up with that? Is that a rare car or what?

The definition of 442 changed over the years. The one you are referring to only occurred in 1964 the first year car.

I guess the meaning of 442 changed throughout the years since not all 442's have the 400 motor.

My '65 has 4 bbl.- 4doors - 2 (Dual) tail pipes, and a single exhaust with a dual outlet muffler. Rare Deluxe model.
