70 Olds Cutlass Pace Car

Does anyone know where a List of Vin numbers are listed for the 1970 Cutlass pace car? Trying to figure out what number my car is. Also like to know which cars ran in the 1970 Indianapolis race.

Sorry I will try to attach it again.

If this does not work, then the Assignment list is on the 442.com web site under Tech Data - Codes section. Good luck

When was your car built ?

Thanks for the list. I was looking at the vin numbers like they were lotto numbers hoping I hit. But like always, the numbers didn't match up.

Thanks for the list. Now I just need to figure out how I can figure out which number my pace car is.

What is the build date of your car ? One of the Pace car experts might be able to help you. I bought my Pace Car locally in the spring of 2010 and I am still learning a lot.

My Cutlass is #79 of the cars assigned to track duties. Vin M296641. Build date of 03C - third week March. Yours is very late, might be at the end of Pace Car production.

Mine is in the shop now. I started a thread under the major projects forum. I need to post more photos.

What is the build date on the cowl tag? lower left hand corner 3 digits total.
should be (example) 03C
03=March C=3rd week

Also looking at the list, last Supreme built was 304611.

My buddy has car#2 actual track car. He also has his list and is invited with his car to Indy.

I am not the expert on the 70 Pace cars and hopefully someone that is will correct me if I am wrong. If your car was built 6-70 as you stated then I do not think your Pace car will have a number. I am assuming only the cars at the track were given numbers. If your car was built 6-70, that was after the race. Check your cowl tag for a build date as 1970cs suggested. I always thought all the pace cars were built before the Indy 500. I would contact the 70 Pace car advisor in the back of JWO. If you can not find his info let me know, I can probably get it for you. You can search here for DROLDSRPH, he is the Pace Car advisor and can give you solid answers.
There is evidence of one Pace car's number being on the back of the liscene plate holder.

protecto plate

The date on the protecto plate is when it was retailed/sold. My car was produced 06B or June 2nd week, sold 6-18-70.

I'm not an expert on Pace Cars either and am new to owning an Olds. Having available the list of VIN's for cars assigned to the track is a big plus. Such a list is not available for 1967 and 1969 Pace Cars. But like the 1968 Hurst Olds, it is likely the Olds Pace Cars were produced in batches given the special striping. Another way to take the question if the car is not a track car is where does it stand in the production sequence of all Pace Cars. This is where the registry becomes important. Plus knowing that the cars were produced in batches would be important. The exceptionally late production of this car ( after the race ) certainly stands out. Not an expert just trying to provide some ideas

Don,

I know my car was not at the race since it was built after. They used 120 Pace Cars at the race. They didn't use all of the ones built at the race. I know that for fact. But the numbers of the cars built are the number of Y74's. So in my case, since there were 358 Cutlass made as Pace Cars, I am just trying to figure out what number mine is or if it's a real pace car. I know I have the tag saying it's a Y74, but the vin is what is making me question it. The last vin I found was a 442 that was a Barret Jackson car with a 311 which is the first 3 of the last 6. Mine is a 319. So if mine is real, it could maybe be the last 358 or close to it. If it's the last one, that would make the cars value go up. That is what I am trying to figure out.

Pat - Thanks for the message, I emailed that guy and waiting to see if he responds and see what he says.

Interesting about the protecto plate. I will have to look at mine and look at the tag under the hood and compare. Thanks for the info.

Interesting. I just got a call from my buddy who is helping me and he found a 442 Pace Car with a vin of 344670M324185, so things are looking up for my Pace car now that I found a vin in a higher range than mine.

Maybe one of you pace car experts may know how many 442 4-speed pace cars where built in 1970?

Just to clarify about my protecto plate, that was not a Y74 car just referencing the build date to retail date! and showing Lansing plant build sequence.

Browsing the net this ad claimed VIN ending 300186 as car#167 Cutlass Pace car.

Also caught another with 3-70 build date VIN ending 295412, both are not on the pace car list!

I got in touch with a guy who keeps records on all 1970 Pace cars. He knew of my car and found it in 2008 and had extensive information on it that he shared. He did verify it's a true pace car. He is going to send me pictures of the file he has on my car so I can update my file. Just waiting to get more info back from him.

I found a "broadcast card " or whatever the proper term is for it inside the passenger seat. I took the back cover off to redo the seats and it was behind the plastic cover in between the springs

I see my wording is misleading, pace car list, should be festival or track car list!

VIN is too late to be a Festival or Track car from the list I have. Should check the trim tag on the cowl to see if it says Y74

I'm jumping into the conversation a couple of years too late, but I just bought a 1970 442 Y74 Pace Car 2 months ago. My was is VIN# 344670M310381, with a build date of 4A (last week of April). It was not used at Indy. My car was sold new at Gowen Oldsmobile in Charlotte, NC and, per a longtime employee of Gowen Olds, it was used as the pace car at Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR races in 1970, but I have not been able to confirm this yet. I do know that the 1971 Charlotte Pace Car was a 1971 Charger R/T with the same white-with-black-stripes color scheme.

Just to stick my nose in on this thread. About 1985 I traded a Pinto yes a Ford Pinto for a 70 Cutlass pace car to the original owner. it had been treated very poorly over the years. It ran and drove home but was rough. The front seat was very worn, top had holes, engine leaked everywhere but did run, all the ram air parts were there and it had the original motor and trans. Rally wheels were still there and the right quarter and door had been hit and fixed poorly and that part was in primer. I drove it for a while and then pulled the engine to overhaul it and put a 330 in place that I had just to keep it driving. I was offered more than I could turn down for it and sold it before anything else could be done. The guy did not take the original engine and about 5 years later I saw it at the Portland Oregon swap meet and it looked awesome. It was a new person who owned it and they put a 69 350 in it. I told him I had the original engine at that time and he did not care. I have no idea where it is now. The car or the engine. It was a real Y74 car by the cowl tag and the paint other than the right door and front of the quarter on that side was original. In the trunk when I got it was the stickers for the sides they had never been put on and were junk by then to say the least. I have a few old pictures of that car but no other information.

Cool cars for sure.
