I noticed while detailing the air conditioning vents that the small roll up/down ***** on the center vent were checking and the plastic chrome was separating. I looked at some of my spare units and noticed that all of them were like this. I’m thinking that this is fairly common and wondered how others doing in depth restoration have coped with it. Does anyone actually have really nice examples or did they just send them out to be rechromed.

 

As a follow up, I ended up stripping the damaged chrome from the plastic rings by soaking them in muriatic acid, followed by a water/baking soda wash and finally clear water rinse. I painted the rings with some chrome aerosol, which did make them look better. After detailing the vent louvers with a chrome paint pen from Hobby Lobby, I decided to try the paint pen on the rings. This brightened the chrome dramatically and returned them to a factory appearance. I was satisfied with the overall look and will call it “good”. The cost was nearly negligible, with just time invested.
