I can virtually guarantee that the "L173" is a date code. Any time you see numbers held in the mold with screws like that, it means they are something which has to change frequently, like a date code.

As for how to interpret L173, I don't know. On most cast iron parts there's just one to three digits, designating days 1 through 365 for the year, and you're left to guessing what the year was. But I've never studied caliper date codes before.

In this case.
L = Month
13 = day of month
3 = year

There is a seven digit part number that will be on the outside of the caliper.
On the backside of the caliper photo I have posted it shows just the last 3 digits. The large "L" stands for left. The Julian date is just numbers, for day of year, yours having an L that precedes the number I think may be an later year caliper. The dots in a circle are a time stamp, and the "CFD" stands for Central Foundry Division. The 636 is the last 3 digits of the part number repeated on the backside. A confirmed part number for Oldsmobile "A" body is: 5463 636 and 5463 637 left and right respectively. I believe 5470 675 and 5470 676 is correct for Olds "A" body's also, but have not confirmed this.
