69 w-30 oai

Z1137ss and I have been PM ing about how to make a 69 W-30 air cleaner out of 2 442 air claenrs. [For lack of anything else to do]

For reasons known only to Al Gore, His PM pics didn't work, so I thought I start a thread so he can upload pics for anyone who is interested in the dimensions of the famous W-30 OAI set up.

And before ya jump on me. No I'm not gonna fake a 69 W-30. I just want to know more about them.

Jamesbo, do you need pictures of a factory air cleaner to get the dimension from? John

Well, your first problem is that the snorkels on the 68-69 O.A.I. air cleaners are straight, as opposed to the tapered snorkels used on other air cleaners.

Jamesbo, it will probably be next weekend before I can dig it out of the garage and photograph it.

Joe, well that will make sure nobody trys to pass it off as an original! It still may look nicer than the aftermarket fiberglass dual opening air cleaners.

Decades ago I saved a straight snorkel from something so I could make up an OAI air cleaner, but never did it. I also still have the plastic 45 deg. piece that popped into it and went from rectangular to round. If you look around, you may find some of them in junkyards.

Well I certainly hope these pics stay up. When I loaded them in the pm they were fine. I checked the message. So why did this guy paint this orange? You can see how he cut the slot and tacked the four corners. From the outside you would never know it wasn't a dual snorkel. Good luck Jamesbo!

Jamesbo,

I have an original 69 OAI air cleaner.
Some of the pics aren't the best, but give you an idea.
If you still need dimensions, let me know.
Hope this helps.

#5 Passenger side snorkel. Smooth side of snorkel faces firewall.

#6 There is a flat tapered flare where the snorkel connects to the base.

# 7 Inside base looking through the passenger side snorkel. About a 3/8" lip from the base into the snorkel. Notice the grommet for the valve cover tube for the passenger side valve cover.
#7

#8 Close up shot of the passenger side grommet for valve cover tube.

#9 Front side of passenger snorkel as it faces the front of the engine. Notice the pinch seal runs along the right side of the snorkel. The driver side snorkel has the pinch seal on the right side too.
#9

#10 Another close up view of the tapered end of the snorkel where it meets the base.

#11 Another detail, looking into the drivers side snorkel. Notice the center support divider looks like a Z but with a straight center. The Passenger snorkel center divider is a backwards Z with a straight center.
