69 super stock wheels

In my Oldsmobile restoration book i have they say 69 had an all chrome 5 spoke wheel with no trim Ring.
Is this 69 only? anyone know.
After doing some more reading i believe they are non disc brake 66-70?

The 66-69 14X6 SSI wheels have chrome rims and do not take a trim ring. In the '69 model year, the SSI wheel started receiving the "LE" wheel code and it was stamped into the non-showing side of the rim, along with a date code. The SSI up to that point would fit only drum brake cars. Around the end of March 1969, production changed on the SSI wheel so that it would fit disc brake cars. This new wheel received the "LY" wheel code, also stamped into the non-showing side of the rim with a date code. I don't think the "LY" wheel was made very long because they seem to be hard to come by today, as compared to the "LE" style SSI. After the '69 model year, the SSI wheel went to 14X7 and production varied year-to-year to include or not need trim rings, depending upon if the rim was chrome-plated or not, respectively.

From discussions I have read over the years, the center section can be cut out and used on a 15" wheel disc. If that's correct, you could make 15x7, 15x8 or 15x10 wheels out of them.

Those are drum SS1's. The profile on the right here is disc brake compatible.

I don't know if these came from the factory, but this is my '69 4-4-2 with SSI's that were on it when I bought it as 2nd owner in 1982.
The guy I bought it from said he got it new for his 18th B'day, and this is how it came. I've no reason to doubt him.

As an uninformed dude back in the day, I put my AR CP200 wheels from my then-recently totaled '68 on this car, and [GASP!] gave away the SSI's to the tire shop.

When they get here I will see if they fit over the disc they will be up for sale most likely if you want to put back on the 69 like you had I’ll get the codes on them when they arrive and maybe we can figure out exactly what year

It's funny that back in the day those SSI wheels were worth next to nothing, whether they were LE or LY coded wheels. When I got my '69 (back in 1987), it had the 4 original LY disc brake wheels on the car but no spare. I looked in the pick-n-pull and pull-a-part junkyards in Southern California for two years before I found an LY wheel (on a Buick of all things!) and it was just $10, plus another dollar if I wanted to get the tire pulled from the wheel, which I did. I found 5 other LE style SSI wheels rather easily, again at $10/each plus a dollar for the pull, and they are now on my '68.

Nice that you got original center caps on 4 of the 5 wheels.

If you don't use those wheels, I'm sure you can sell them and get most or all of your money back.

833C fit disk brakes?

Anybody familiar with the 833C "deep dish" 14 x 6 MWC rims and know whether they'll fit disc brake cars? Offset is 3 1/8" instead of the normal 4.5". I have a couple of these dated 1968. Also, the spokes are chrome and not the Oldsmobile brushed look.

That looks like the early SSI wheel that came out with the centers as chrome as the rims. There was a problem with the black paint sticking to the smooth chrome plating and the solution was to do a light bead blasting of the center part to give the black paint a better sticking surface. That's why the later SSI wheels have that dull finish on the spokes rather than the shiny smooth chrome finish.

The 833 wheel will not fit disc's. In fact this particular wheel is not OEM to any of the big three. It was one of motor wheels offerings over the counter at speed shops, Sears Etc back in the day.
If interested in selling i may be interested , trying to put a set together for a project. Shoot me an email

A quick confirmation. The wheels are compatible, around the car, for those years that the front were disc and the rears were drum.

The wheels he posted are drum only; I've said it a few times already.

Here are the pictures, again. You can see that the rim contour of these 5 wheels in the bottom picture matches the rim contour of the left rim in the top picture (front of rims are to the bottom of that picture) and is the drum profile. The only ones that work have the disc caliper clearing profile to the right in the top picture. This profile is on ALL SSIIs, ALL SSIs with chrome ring, ALL 14x7 SSIs, and some 1969 14x6 SSIs. Most 14x6 SSIs are drum only.

Thanks for the additional and comprehensive input Koda. Can't get to much information. But, I do read and comprehend pretty well , even though, the older I get I can certainly skip a beat from time to time. However, I was confirming that all wheels were compatible / interchangeable on cars with front disc and rear drums. If this is an incorrect statement, please address that. Take it as a question if that is a better approach.

I only bring it up since wheel to disc / drum brake relationships are in the discussion.

Oh, my mistake. I thought you were making the statement. A question I understand. I didn't mean to be overly snippy.

The crux of the matter is that all SSI's prior to a certain date are drum only. Every SSII/III period, and all SSIs after that date are good for both disc and drum. They changed the "hoop"
design of the 14x6 rim to accommodate the caliper. But, in the picture below, you can see they look 99% identical from the front (the center is "out" a little more on the disc wheel).

The only way to really tell is to look at the backside/inside, and also refer to rim codes.

Cool...a thorough comparison, as usual.

These wheels are much like my '70 Nova wheel...with beauty rings. Original to the car. My issue is, the wheel lug countersinks look to be wallering out. Not sure if I am going to look at repairing or replacing but, would like to stay original as much as possible. Have you seen this as a problem before?
