Hello everyone
ok I am helping out my uncle with his 69 cutlassWhat's needed on the outside to look like a 442
Looks like nose emblem
Trunk emblem
Trunk spoiler
Fender emblems
Also does anyone have any template for mounting the emblems.
The car is a bucket seat center console car too so thats good.
Thanks in advance I'm not an olds guy
Buick GS and Pontiacs for me.
Have a good day.
Stainless trim on the rear deck lid edge, and either stripes on the hood power bulges or a double pinstripe, both ending at the hood vents. Rear decklid has a double pinstripe matching the color of the hood stripe, going over the tail lights. Fender peak trim all the way from the headlight to the drip rail on the rear quarter, as well as stainless wheel opening moldings.
Also, 442s came standard with A-pillar/roofline bright dirp rail molding trim, whether or not a vinyl top was used. Cutlass S did not except when vinyl top was used.
The only 442 that came with the rear deck spoiler was the Hurst/Olds (RPO W46) package which was done by Hurst's conversion facility, Demmer Engineering. Not that you couldn't add a spoiler if you want, it's just that it wasn't even an option in 69 for any Oldsmobile. So if you're going to fake authenticity, then fake it correctly.
The interior door panels have a black/silver rocket on them instead of the "S" emblem. Also, the door arm rests have the chrome backing plates behind them standard. There's a 442 plate decal where "Cutlass" goes inside the rectangle on the glovebox. Plus 442 and Cutlass Supreme came standard with woodgrain applique on the dash. Cutlass Supremes did, but Cutlass S did not. (note in the pic below, the steering wheel is not a 69 steering wheel. It's from a 70 which is "upside down" from the 69 and has a rocket emblem on it.
The trunklid 442 emblems were spread out a bit more than the 70-72 style. As far as templates, I think some people here have made templates for the trunklid emblem placement from real cars.
The front "tooth" has indentations on the back side of the bosses that you can use as a guide to drill out the proper holes for mounting the front 442 emblems. These are "special" emblems like the trunklid, that are made specifically for that application as they have angled pegs on the outer numbers, and the center 4 is bent to fit the center peak angles. IIRC, the center "4" uses the existing emblem holes, but if not, you'll have to fill and drill.
Correction from Bryan Burch's comments above- it was single pinstripe on the decklid for 69 442 pinstripe (Unless W-30 which had double horizontal stripe part only with single stripe around top of tail lights) and the trunk trim plate has to go. The back end should end up looking a lot like this:
Fortunately the car has a different vin than a 442, so it will be a rebadging as opposed to a clone to deceive, so whatever makes your uncle happy. There are publications that should have the holes, like the body manual and the assembly manual. However, no one puts badges on with holes in modern automotive, so you could get good label adhesion tape and stick them on and not have to drill. Hopefully the existing holes get blocked. Use a lot of masking tape to get the numbers square and level.
Awesome tips guys
yeah my uncle will be just driving it around and enjoying it as a cruiser
Once I get it going we will grab those emblems
Just wanted to start getting info sooner than later
