68W30 - FS - not mine

I looked at this car and had many discussions with the previous owner about purchasing this car. (Car was in NH)

The only reason I didn't was because there were NO docs to prove the car was real and the car was missing the original OW trans. Now it has docs???

So, now how does this car become a numbers car with a buy it now of 115K.
I say BS!

About 6 months back I could have bought the car for 50K but it wasn't restored at that time.

Cheers,

Sam

What are we talking about, Ebbs Saffron Convertible?

http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_de...=SC0513-154105

It didn't meet reserve at $70K

and if it's the car I agree. The docs seemed to come out of nowhere. If the docs were out there, Ebbs would have found them

Yes, Ebbs car.

If it had the docs and the OW tranny, that car would be in my driveway a long time ago.

Ebbs, even talked to me to see if I could find him a 68 OW tranny??

Wtf?

Speaking of 68 W30's, do you know anything about this car? The new owner claimed it has paperwork but the only paperwork specifically referenced in the listing is the Protecto-Plate which wouldn't tell you if it's a W30, correct?

Don't know that car but I believe the new owner is in Mass.

Cheers,

in the Mecum description it does not claim to have "documentation" though it does say;

"Paperwork with this rare 442 W-30 convertible includes extensive ownership history, owner's manual and original sales brochure, receipts and photographs of the car’s restoration."

Translates to;

We know who owned it for a while, we purchased an owner's manual and a sales brochure off of ebay and we have receipts and photo's to prove we spent money on it but aren't willing to say for sure its a real W30.

None of the above says its a W30 so from their point they are not fibbing.

Well, possibly it could. If it was an automatic, it would. (yes, this one isn't). But if it came with the "standard" W30 4.33 gears, that would have a 4.33 code on the axle tube and on the POP and also would prove it was a W30. Only W30 442s came from the factory with 4.33s and would carry the exclusive 4.33 code. '68 was also the last year this info was on the POP.

The BIG part they are fibbing about is stating that its a numbers car; when in fact I know it isn't as the OW tranny was NOT there and was told it was long gone.

Sam, the only thing I see there about numbers matching (and it repeated twice) refers specifically to the engine being numbers matching. I'd still ask what engine numbers match what, but as far as the trans goes, there are no claims about whether it is numbers matching, original, or even correct. And the lack of any claims there makes it safe to assume it is not the original trans. But rather than state that, they would much rather that one will *think* it has the the original trans.
One has to read between the lies. Er, lines?

For that kind of money, you think they would have asked Chris W. to locate a correct double bend tube from the air cleaner to the driver side valve cover (instead of the hose that is showing)...

"Protecto-Plate which wouldn't tell you if it's a W30, correct?"

No, incorrect.

POP will list the Trans as "OW1234" or similar.
Only W30's and perhaps H/O came with OW auto trans in 1968, and I think we can rule out a '68 H/O convertible.

Me wonders if those heads are real or "Memorex".

I agree for that kind of effort, they should have procured the CORRECT PCV Tube and Grommet. Points off....

Chris

I was referring to the red four speed W30 but Kurt pointed out the same above about the automatics.

There should be a mandatory translator at all auctions.
"blah blah blah factory correct blah bullshed" says the seller... followed by

"which translates to [insert more plausible version of what is KNOWN and reasonably provable vs. what is speculation]..."

Like the old 60 minutes' "Point/ Counterpoint" segment...

"Jane, you ignorant ****..."
