Is this 68 conv worth 10k?

I'm really interested in it, but outside the unfinished body, it doesn't have much else going for it.

I'm looking for a 68 conv to restore.

I would just like to get some of your opinions, b/c I'm thinking more between 6k-7k

go to the link below...THANKS!

6 or 7, maybe less. That car doesn't even have a drivetrain in it. Mine's just a Cutlass, and I bought it 12 years ago, but I paid less than $10,000 for it and it was a 100% done driver. I've been doing things to it, but nothing had to be done to make it look decent and drive it.

Unless your heart's set on a 'vert, this seems like a much better project to start with!
Even with transport, you'd have more to play with!

If it had an original motor 7K tops. I am thinking 4ish the way it sits. 10K they are nuts.

I paid $2000 for my 68 442 convertible in 2003. That car is worth $4000 tops

If you're really interested in this car, call up the guy and talk about it. Do some comparison shopping first to find out what 'complete' cars are going for. Sounds to me like he wants you to pay for his vacation to Europe.
No driveline? Some nice options, most bodywork done.. Unknown rear end.....10K is waaay high IMO Does he even have the original driveline that goes with the car? If it was included, I'd go maybe 6K. There's still a lot to do on this roller.

I've talked with the guy via e-mail and I offered 6k right off the top, but he thought that was too low. He didn't want to go below 9k. I just don't see it.

IF it was documented that Steve McQueen drove it...it MIGHT be that much...maybe?

I agree with all of you, but I'm sorta new to this and I thought I was missing something, b/c he's not backing off that 10k number very much.

No documents, no drivetrain which equals no #'s matching, needs a new top, interior. I just don't see how he can justify 9k-10k

It's a 442, but's it's missing both the 4's and the 2...it's a body with no soul.

I want it, and I'll buy it at a fair price, but how do you get someone like that to get to a fair price?

I really think he put some too much money into it, and he's just trying to recoup it all.

Thanks to everyone for their input!

NO, it's NOT a 442. The cowl tag says otherwise. Like I posted ^^ If it was a 442 the code on the Cowl would start as 34467. This is just a Cutlass vert, 33667 and not even a Cutlass Supreme - 34267. Don't get hung up on this car. If you really want a 442, go look elsewhere for a legit match on the VIN/Cowl for a much better price. You can tear it all apart and do all the nice bodywork yourself if you are handy that way.

Think logically and reasonably about this. It's not something you need, but it may be something you want. If it was me? I'd look further. If he won't budge off the 10K? Move on, otherwise you're going to end up building a car that will cost you 20K and it still won't be worth that much when you're done. If you have the money to throw at it though.........

OK lets look at this from a pure $$ angle. he wants 10k. now it needs paint- add at least 5k because the body is not ready to paint. now we are at 15k. it needs interior-another 3k with top. now we are at 18k. it needs an engine and trans- another 5k by the time you get exhaust, radiator, etc. now we are at 23k. now add another 4k for trim, tires and all the little $20 items and we are at 27k to have a nice car. what can you buy right now for $25,000? if you dont have that cash laying around then the car winds up sitting in the garage while searching for cash till you get fed up and sell it for 7k. the best thing is to buy a driving car that you can do small things on and enjoy. the market still sucks if you are a seller and a buyer with cash can deal on lots of cars right now. just my $.02 which is about all my advice is worth.

I completely agree with you Allan and Compedgemarine.

Bottom line for me is I'm looking for a restore candidate that someone else is going to restore for me, and I have a budget. I'm going this route b/c I want exactly what I want for about the amount you said marine.

This car would be a perfect candidate for that IF it was selling for what it I think and most of you think it's worth.

I'm just trying gather information so I have some ammunition next time I approach him. If he won't budge then I DEFINITELY WONT for exactly all of the reasons everyone has stated. But, if I can get a deal on it, why not?

Ultimately I thought this car was grossly overpriced and I just needed some assurance from you guys.

Now I know I'm not off my rocker...at least when it comes to this issue.

Thanks!

No connection, but here is what looks like a decent driver for $1k less than that project car.

IMO it's not worth 10k. I traded a plain jane '70 Camaro for my '68 matching number convertible 442 back in 07. The Camaro was worth about 2k.

Also it maybe a 442 as Lancing cars did have cowl tags with 33667 and VIN's with 34467.

Heres a 68 project for less. I personally still think its too high, but whatever the market will bear. Its been for sale for a long time. At least it has a drivetrain.

@rhett838 Are you set on a 442 or just any 68 convertible?

You are the only buyer for that car and he will have it a long time at that price. I would walk away from that deal because it is at least 5k overpriced. You could buy a running car for 10k and enjoy it while you fix it up.

Let them continue working on their vintage BMWs and take yourself to a '68 Olds Cutlass or 442 somewhere else.

Or here is a 442 with some rare w-40 parts on it. My car doesn't even have one w-40 part so it has to be really rare. Mine has red fender wells, this car has a red w-40 radiator hose. Lee

I thought you have to go by the VIN to tell if its a 442. Im not sure about 68s, but I know that most 69 442s did not have the 344 on the cowl.
Either way this car cant be worth more than $4k

Jeffroi - I'm looking for ANY 68 convertible. The end goal is to have it look like a 442 though.

Even if you have to find a nose, doors, and interior, for $500 bucks and transport, it's a far cry from $10k, and number matching engine and trans!!
Hell, if I had a place for it - - -

Allan,

68 442's got Cutlass cowl tags (as well as some 69's). As long as there's no evidence of VIN tampering, if it's a 344678 VIN, then it's a 442 convertible. This is definitely true of Lansing built cars and many BOP plants as well. (& if you do a search here and pretty much every other Olds site you'll find that to be true)

68 convertible

the 68 convertible in Grand Rapids MI is only an hour and 20 minutes from me if you needed someone to inspect it I would go look at it for gas money and provide you with a detailed description and list of work and parts needed . I know my 68's well as I have 2 now ,one I have owned for 29 years and have had many 68 parts cars over the years. and honestly the 68 442 convert in CA may be a little over priced but not that much, first of all its a solid body from CA with little body work to do and you would be much futher ahead to do a restoration on a solid car to start with and don't forget this is an Olds site where fellow Olds enthusiasts could help you find an engine and trans and whatever parts needed to complete it. it all depends on what you want but regardless of a few missing parts or an engine and trans, they can be found\bought but a solid body = not so easy to find and a hell of a lot less work and time\ money spent restoring.

Way overpriced at 10K. I'd place it in the 5K range
