67 Cutlass chin spoiler

There should be a plastic piece that I think was to keep water on the highway from splashing into the fan.
Is what you describing look like the one attached to the bottom of this core support? Not the best picture, but the one I came up with. If its unclear I can try to snap a better picture later. John
Larry, it looks like you were typing just a little faster than I was!

I was surfing Craigslist and I thought there was a red 1968 or 69 Cutlass project/parts car in the Bend area. I worked out of Redmond summer of 1988 and I still remember drooling over the rust free cars in the bone yards there.

Not sure if they all had the air dam, but pretty sure a factory A/C or HD cooling car would have had it. Its purpose was to deflect airflow upward and into the radiator area instead of letting it pass under the car. Later cars had the area between bumper and core support sealed with a rubber sheet to force airflow thru the radiator.

It does not belong on his car. When I added a 3 core V8 radiator and fan shroud, I also had to add the lower core support due to the different spacing of the radiator tanks 6 cyl as to the V8 radiators.

Could we all make a new year's resolution to stop calling this piece an "air dam" or "spoiler"? It's a small air deflector that looks nothing like an air dam. As noted, it serves two purposes. First and foremost, it closes out the gap between the bumper and the core support so that all air coming through the grille goes through the radiator and not under the car (hint: if you are having cooling problems, be sure this part is in place). Second, it deflects water down away from the fan so it doesn't spray up under the hood.
Now THIS is an air dam:

Yes the Cutlass has this part. I recently parted 2 67 Cutlasses and both of these had them. Neither one was heavy duty cooling or AC cars just 330 V8 engine equipped. My 67 442's also have the deflector.

Strange, that the way this "air deflector" is mounted, it looks like the air would pass under it, instead up being scooped up into the radiator.

As it should. Again, the purpose of this part is to ensure that air coming through the grille passes through the radiator and doesn't instead flow out the gap between the bumper and the core support. That's why this "deflector" is more accurately a "closeout" to seal that gap. The angled part that sticks down has a secondary purpose to deflect water, not air.

I've parted out several '67's over the years and currently own 5.
Everyone I've ever seen has the air deflector you mention.
I think it's safe to assume they were standard equipment.
