Hello, does anyone have or know someone with a 54 /55 /56 olds convertible?
I am looking for the dimensions of the L bracket that holds the top frame on to car. I need to fabricate 2 of them for a restoration we are doing.
Thanks

Hello everyone. We are completing a 54 olds star fire. The 2 L brackets that mount the top frame are missing so we need to fabricate 2 new ones. I am in need of the dimensions and pictures of the L bracket. The hole dimension spacing etc.
Thank you

I have found a parts 98 4DHT that has the power window mechanisms, but are the rear windows mechanisms on the 2DHT the same as those on the rear of a 4DHT, i always thought not due to the way the 2D rears go down, they rock back then drop.

I am assuming that the window mechanisms in the manuals are totally different from the power windows, and that everything needs replacing.

Any help much appreciated

The Hollander Manual shows a listing. I am assuming that what you have is what they referred to as a Holiday Coupe.
The part numbers for the front electric regulators are 4157318 & 4157319. The same parts were used in:
Buick 1954 Special & Century 2Dr. hard top & Special convertible
Buick 1955 - 1956 Special & Century convertible & 2Dr. hard top
Oldsmobile 1954 - 1956 convertible & Holiday coupe

There is no listing for the rears on the 2 Dr. cars.

Your assumption is correct that manual & electric regulators are different, as are regulators from 2 door and 4 door cars.
To find something that will interchange without modification you will probably have to find one of the above listed vehicles.

New (to me) 56 Super 88 4 door HT

Just got this 56 last week. Was hard starting but did run,. Then changed out the plugs, plug wires, rotor, rotor cap and points. now very weak spark. points set at .016 there was no condenser in the dist. the one on the coil must be for the radio noise suppression. When I hooked up an external condenser across the points it had good spark and ran. Do these 324s operate without a coil-points condenser. If there is one where is it?

Thanks for the info

WOW. it was running without a condenser. No wonder it didn't run good. Very weak and intermittent spark without a condenser. Thanks again for the info, I was going nuts trying to see where the cap went.

I just bought this 1955 Super 88, and it's now cruising the roads here in Denmark
The car is with full history, and began it's life in Ohio in april 1955.
I'm happy that I found this forum, it seems like all the expertise regarding the old car is here

Best regards

Welcome to the forum. I have a '55 also. If you are planning to keep the car, try to get a shop manual and owner manual for it. They have much information in them. Reproductions are alright if they have been reproduced properly.

Sorry. I haven't checked in for a while. When is (was) Back to the 50s in Hudson? It's certainly close enough to home, but I hadn't seen or heard any advertising.

Hi, all! I started looking and posting here when I started building a 61 Olds for a customer. But I also own a 55 98 Holiday Coupe. Bought it in 81 and had it on the road in 83. I am a Kustom car guy, so I did remove a lot of the Olds' character. It's chopped 2 1/4". 56 Packard tail lights, T Bird headlights, 55 Desoto grill, 55 Pontiac side trim. Pancaked hood, frenched antennas, and lake pipes. Running the original 324, hydro, with 3 x 2's, Car had factory Power seats, windows, steering and brakes. I added AC and cruise control. Ran it on the road all over the eastern half of the US from 83 to 2003. Now it's sitting, needing a complete resto. I put 160 K miles on it, wore out 3 sets of ties, and 2 sets of brakes. Hopefully it will be in the shop for it's redo in a year or so.

Welcome!! Any four door sedans are great, but the mid fifties ones are the best!

Show us some pictures when you get a chance.

Tryin to get the 55 on the road

Just got my 55 day after fathers day. Previous owner did a lot of beautiful work to it. I cant get a brake drum.off which has be furious because i wanna go thru the brakes before i hit the road. Also need to fix a gas guage sending unit ground, as well as a trans fluid leak, oil leaks around the oil filter or oil pressure tube, and an oil leak behind the dash. Didnt think that was possible.... Hopefully its on the road stretching its legs by August.

Brake drum. Is the drum loose, just can't get it off? Most likely they haven't been turned in a while. I had to back off the adjusters enough to retract the brake pads enough to get narrower than the lip that's worn into the inside the end of the drum.

It's a nice looking S88. If it's the front drum, remove it with the hub. The gas sending unit ground should be "straightforward". Don't try to operate the vehicle below 1/4 tank unless you have modified the pickup and/or gauge sender. The trans leak could be several possibilities depending on location. Oil leak around the oil filter could be traces of old gasket(s) that were never removed, or a gouged aluminum sealing surface, or as you said the oil pressure tube. The oil leak behind the dash is likely also the oil pressure tube or the gauge itself, but more likely the tube.

56 olds 324

hi i have recently had a 1956 olds rocket 324 motor rebuilt for a hot rod i am building ,the problem is i have made a side steer for it and dont have the room for a clutch pedal and would really like to have an auto in it so my wife can drive it also ,i have a 1951 auto for it but would like to bolt up a turbo 350 which is possible but i talked to bendtsens and i explained that i have the inspection cover for the trans but it wont fit over a 176 tooth flywheel and he said any of the three inspection covers will work that they are all the same size, well in a little confused because the one i have will NOT fit .looking for some direction Thanks Pat

Greetings all, I have a 54 Super 88; I suspect that means I may join? Is there a sub-group site on this larger site for 54-56 owners? How to get to that? Sorry, but anyone know how to help me learn how to attach photo of car so that I can have that with post? Thanks.

Gawain drop on down to the vintage forum that is generally where we hang out on a regular basis but any forum that pertains to your problem will work in a pinch. However sometimes you will get generic answers that aren't correct for a mid fifties car but would be correct for a 70's cutlass. Somethings changed in 25 years.

If you look at the stickies on the newbie forum you will see a post on how to post pictures (first stickie). Try that and if you have problems ask again..... Tedd

Hello, Gawain! In addition to Tedd Thompson's excellent advice, we have a pretty good following in the 54-56 Olds group on Facebook. If you're a Facebook kind guy, come check us out! But, hang out here, too. You can learn a lot from these folks.
