50 Years Ago, First 442

It was 50 years ago, the Friday before Memorial day, I picked up my new 68 442. Got out of the army in Feb, ordered, a basic 442, 4SP, Posi, bucket seats, Saffron yellow, black interior, and traded my 64 Nova, with 17K.Picked up the car,and drove it all weekend, even thought it was rainy most the week end. Was living in Sioux Falls SD, and all the guys with nice cars would cruse downtown, which had two one way streets, so just keep making the loop, looking at and testing some lite to lite. I still remember for much fun it was. Still fun, but not as much as then.

Nice memory! That was the thing back then, to "cut the gut" and cruise up and down the main streets of town. With gas at some 30 cents a gallon, a "dollar's worth of ethel" was all you needed for a great cruisin' night!

I still have the '68 4-4-2 convertible that my parents bought new, even though it was a year old, when I was a senior in high school (provincial white, black top and interior, has a real W36 stripe, but automatic and bench seat because it was a family car). Not as much fun finding non-ethanol gas and buying it now, but still fun going for a drive! And my wife likes scooting over to the middle so she can sit right next to me!

Wow. That's a nice memory to have. I was a little too young to buy these cars when they were new, so I spent my high school years stalking good used ones. As a consequence, I've never in my life bought a new car. By the time I could afford one, there was nothing I wanted.
