442 Trumpet spaceing

What is the correct spacing when installing tail pipe Trumpets. How far should they stick out from the bumper?
Any good photos or measurements.

I've seen 'em way out there. Not sure what is correct, but I like 'em so trumpet flare is in some so it starts to fill the cutout space.. That's how mine are. I say to each his own....
Found a pic of mine.

Spacing the trumpets out a little keeps the bumper free of exhaust buildup.

I haven't replaced my exhaust yet so hopefully these 4 pictures are of help.

Driver's side, Passenger side sets out a little bit more and not sure why.

Center in the bumper cut-out.

Distance from the cut-out. Incase you can't tell the ruler is on the raise portion of the cut-out shown in the last picture.

After I finished the installation of the new carpet, the exhaust will likely be the next job. Thinking of Pypes exhaust in 2.5

The reality is that the production tolerances on the location of the trumpets was all over the map. The only dimensional requirement in the entire PIM is this one, which deals with clearance to prevent rattling. The exhaust was hung on the chassis before the body drop. The only thing that controlled fore/aft location was the installation of the pipes and mufflers. This drawing implies that the conical part of the trumpet should be about halfway into the notch at the top (Section J-J).

This is what the factory system measured with the original pipes.
I measured before I took it apart, then recreated it when I replaced the system.
I've seen them out too far and in to close.

If you look at the curvature of the bumper profile from a side view, use your eye and make it flow with the profile of the trumpet.
This is the result about 2.5" off the bumper.

I found that taking a picture to my exhaust guy and showing him exactly what I wanted lead to success. I liked mine a bit closer to the bumper than stock.

When I bought 442 tips not out far enough.. melted tail light lenses..

When I had exhaust redone this spring shop installed new EVEN with the furthest out spot on the bumper , from directly above

FWIW, my current 71 442 had original tails on it and did not appear to be jacked with when I first bought it. The top of the tip to the bumper was just a hair over 2.5” to the bumper on pass side and 2-5/8” on driver side. Again just an observation. I’m guessing it varied a bit from car to car.

My bad flowmasters on my 72 just about threw a tip, it was ready to depart the building. I guess I need to break out the welder.
