425 Question

I actually searched the threads and couldn't find anything before posting this so go easy on me please......

I need to replace the tired, original starter on a 425. It's in a Starfire and has "S" manifolds for dual exhaust. All appears to be stock. While I contemplate having the original starter rebuilt or just left on a shelf, I would like to continue driving the car. If I go to Summit's website and look up this engine, am I going to be re-directed to everything that fits a 455? Are there any differences?
I am going to put a high torque mini starter on there until I figure out what I am doing with the original. I don't want to order something and crawl under the car only to find out it won't fit. Any guidance with this is appreciated.

The 425 and 455 are externally identical. Most aftermarket catalogs don't recognize the fact that Olds built motors before 1968, so all they list are 350 and 455. Anything external that fits a 455 also fits a 425.

You can get a remanufactured starter from your local auto parts store, or from an online store such as Rock Auto.

Rock Auto shows reman starters ranging from $30 to $60 + core charge.

If you have a local rebuilder they can rebuild yours in about half a day. I'm fortunate to have an excellent rebuilder 10 minutes away.

Or, you can rebuild it yourself in about half an hour.

If you would just add where you are located in your profile, there might be someone close that would be very helpful in rebuilding your starter if you dont have the right equipment. It doesn't take much to rebuild one of these starters. Mainly proper screwdrivers, maybe a socket or two and some mechanical expertise.

Google starter-alternator rebuild service in western PA. I see a few. I'd go that route first before putting a parts store unit on it. Part store rebuilds these days is a total crapshoot.
Now is the time to examine/replace your battery cables too. Clean the systems grounds.
