2nd vin# on 66 Cutlass (ASAP)
The new owner on my car is at the DMV right now in CA. They are saying he needs to show them a 2nd VIN other than on the door to register the car. Does a 2nd vin even exhist in a 1966? I think I remember the stamped the frame in the rear somewhere. Anyone that can tell me where to tell them exactly where to look?

I also live in Cal. I have had all types of problems registering cars hear from out of state. Cal DMV, seem to think that they make all the rules, and state that have different ones, can't belive everyone is not like CA. I would check the regs on the computor, of the DMV. I can't tell you were any car, new or old has two vins stamped, and that it would or should be stamped where everyone should be able to find easy. I would also ask to see a superviser. I have also went to a different office, and maybe find a person that knows what they are talking about. I would tell them to give me a copy of the reg and page and book it is in. I had to take a bond out on a out of state car to get it registered. Cal DMV, is a PTB.

First of all, the secondary VINs are supposed to be hidden specifically to thwart auto theft (like THAT was effective). Theoretically only law enforcement knew where they were. More to the point, the other VINs were usually VIN derivatives, not full VINs. There should be one on the top of the LH frame rail, behind the rear wheel. This will be a nine character VIN derivative, not the full 13 character VIN. Also, the CHP should be the ones inspecting this and should know where to look.

As I posted to answer your question on another forum, the only locations in 1966 are on top of the frame rail, one at the door and the other over the trunk. It will be 7 digits, 6 for year 66, letter for plant (M=Lansing), then the 6 digit sequence number. You cannot see it without removing the body. Since the frame was available from GMPD and considered replaceable/expendable by GM, it could have no number or the wrong number if replaced with a used one.

The 65 assembly manual calls for other places on the body where a hidden VIN is applied. Doesnt say where these places are. Id think 66 would be the same.

That's just stupid as hell, even for California. The VIN in the doorjamb is the one used to register the car. Period.
Vajenya and North Carolina DMV can have their moments, but nothing this idiotic.
And DMV bureaus around the country wonder why they have the poor customer service reputations they have.

I'm guessing the DMV rep was significantly younger than the car? In any case, newer cars do have two visible VINs. My wife's 1990 Honda Civic, for example, has a conventional VIN tag on the dash and a full VIN (not a VIN derivative) stamped on the firewall in plain sight. Of course, this may have something to do with the fact that the VIN tag is riveted to the dash pad and that pad easily unbolts from the car...

Don't know about '66, but we've a '70 chevelle LS-6 that someone made us pull the heater box on the firewall side and take a picture - of the VIN that was stamped there!!
New one on me!!
BTW - anyone got a connection on Chevy VIN #'s??
Registry says this car might be the last LS-6 - no VIN's higher!!
And a 3rd week of July build date!!
