1970 W-30 automatic camshaft

Anybody use a different camshaft with a rougher idle than the stock W-30 camshaft used in the 1970 W-30 auto with air ?? Looking for a possible upgrade with good vacumn and a nice rough idle. Thanks. Greg

I would use a 1970 to 1972 442 4 speed camshaft. Its in between the auto W30 camshaft and the W31 camshaft. the specs are 294/296 duration .472 lift. I had several of these made.

You do realize these two things are mutually exclusive, right? If all you care about is the "nice rough idle", get a Thumper cam. All the crappy idle of a real long overlap cam with none of the pesky extra horsepower...

Define "nice idle". Do you want a crappy rump-rump idle or not? Your statements are confusing. In any case, the lumpy idle will not work with A/C or power brakes. You'll need to install an aux vacuum pump. The AT may or may not work with manifold vacuum - you might need to adjust the modulator. Olds did offer automatics with the 328 deg cam in 1968-69 W-30s.

The 294/296 cam WAS offered with A/C, so it will work fine. If you've owned these cars, you already know what the idle quality with that cam will be.

not looking for a real bumpy idle, just maybe a in between stock w-30 auto and the w-30 4-speed. since the 294/296 cam was used in cars with a/c i wonder if its ok with the auto too?? probably good bet to just go with the stock auto w-30 cam sounds like, just never had any experience with this cam, how does it sound ?? thanks Greg
