1970 sx convertible

Hey guys wondering if somebody could help me out . I recently aquired a 1970 olds sx convertible from a junkyard that was hours from being crushed the car looks complete has the 455 in it but couldn't see the rear end did those cars all come with posi trac or was that an option in those cars as well?any info would be appreciated . Thanks

The early 2bbl cars came with 2.56 gears. The later 4bbl cars came with 3.08 gears. Other ratios were optional. Posi was not standard but was optional.

Yes - SXes were built in Lansing, Fremont, Arlington and Linden.

Only 793 SX convertibles were built in 1970, so that's a very nice find.

Please see sx455.com for the registry there.

Thanks for the info Terry

Yes devileyejedi check out the registry and see if it is listed. There is a two letter code on the rear end. Look under the driver's side axle housing and that will tell us the original ratio and whether or not it is a posi.

saving a 70 SX convertible from being crushed is pretty awesome. Great find. Definitely post pictures when you get a chance.

I got one pic if I knew how to post it . I got into the car a little deeper today not sure if it can be saved floors and trunk are rotted pretty bad and can't get a look at the frame yet did get the hood open it looks like it has the touring package 455 2 bbl does have duel exhaust but looks like someone replaced the number with a non cutout version . Didn't see a tag on the differential cover maybe could salvage some parts

Before you part it and cut it up give someone a chance to purchase it whole who may want to tackle a large project. New York (Saratoga) rust or Arizona rust? You'll be able to re-coupe what ever it is you paid for it selling it whole.

Snap some decent pics of the trouble spots such as the firewall cowl area under the wiper stainless, dash where it meets the windshield, the all important vert frame. Floors and trunk pans can be grafted in. If the frame and firewall and inner body structures are not totally rotted it can most likely be saved and it should be. Generally we here can tell if its savable or crush-able with decent pictures.

It's like a 442-light... factory BB will have many parts worth saving'
fender braces
exhaust manifolds
stuff like that
Did it have the Dual Gate "His & Hers" shifter? I assume it's auto trans. But, you never know.

ANY amount of rust CAN be fixed.... with time and money.
Thanks for saving it.

I live close to you - in Delmar by Albany and would be glad to take a look at it for you. I just restored a 70 SX Conv which started out sounding like yours - no floors or trunk, bad quarters, etc. As long as frame is solid, anything can be done if you are patient and do a lot yourself. I did most welding/sheetmetal myself other than actually painting it, so my labor was free.

Also curious, I have been to every junkyard (I thought) in the area over the last 25 years and never saw an SX Convertible. Where did you find it?

PM if you want to discuss your car or have me take a look at it for you, or just talk Oldsmobile.

Thanks, Pete
