1970 Olds 442 Convertible

I hope someone can help me. I have been looking for a 1970 442 convertible with air conditioning, automatic, numbers matching in good shape. Currently advertised on ebay is a 1970 442 white convertible in reasonably good shape, original title,protecto-plate, engine block matches vin, transmission according to seller also matched vin on transmission rail, E heads etc. The seller(American Muscle) claims the car is all original and was found in a basement after thirty years. The seller is describing the car as a Y74 1970 442 convertible Indy pace car. The cowl tag identifies it as a Y74 10 A, which I understand to be a pace car, white with a white convertible top.

The car is being advertised as Roger Ward's pace car.

I am confused and look to the membership for clarification. Shouldn't the car left the manufacturer with pace car lettering? There isn't any lettering except the W25 hood stripes follow it onto the trunk.

I hope you can help. And yes, it is a 344 car. Thank you

Is this Roger Ward's Pace car?
Note: Minor interior issues too such as missing convertible top switch bezel, and aftermarket radio, dash bezel looks like more than a 30k mile car too.

I'm pretty sure the pace cars left with the decals in the trunk, to be applied by the owner. The hood and deck lid stripes are consistent with the side stripes for appearance. The IA500 side decals are promotional and could be removed if the next owner wanted to do that. IIRC the side decals are reproduced.

??? That IS the car that is being offered as Roger Wards Pace car. It's listed as:
1970 Oldsmobile 442
1970 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible Y74 Pace Car 34k Miles, Roger Wards' Missing Car

svnt The link to ebay that you provided takes you right to the car identified as Roger Ward's pace car

svnt The link to ebay takes you right to the car. The car in your post though is a hardtop, not a convertible, which is why I am saying it's not the car. Am I getting closer?

The car in my post is my signature. It was my 442 (before the wreck).

I didn't even notice that the lettering wasn't on the doors, even so, that can be replaced. The other documentation proves the authenticity of the car and I wouldn't worry about the decals missing. Everything else looks to be in good condition for a non restored car.
Weather the A/C works or not is another story and will most likely need some attention.

Are we saying that the car in ebay was wrecked?

Trunk stripes are wrong as well as the side stripes.... how can seller claim mostly original paint?
Every panel has been repainted, am I wrong?

Just a few obligatory checks .

First . Perhaps there is a member from the Forum near Crystal Lake IL . If it were me bidding on this car , I would want neutral qualified eyes on it .

Second . Seller seems to have 2 dealerships / North shore Classics @ 149 No . Seymore Ave , Mundelin IL 60060 ph # 847 - 393 - 7887 .
Or , American Muscle Cars / 5220 IL - 31 , Crystal Lake IL . 847 - 485 - 8449 .

My recommendation would be to google : feedback and reviews for these business's .
There seems to be quite a story on the importance and provenance of this being THE car that Roger Ward was in on the mentioned Indy 500 Day . I have zero feel for that . However , the story about it being in previous owners basement for the last 30 years does add credibility to the back story . It would be important ( if I were bidding ) to be able to talk with the aforementioned family .

It seems like a really nice starting point , and the images tell a unique story .
Then it comes down to how you would enjoy the car if it were yours .
Drive it ? Restore it ? How far you want to take it . there are some very knowledgeable Pace Car owners and restorers on here . Seek them out ..
Best of fortune in your search .
J2

Some background information on this car:

Was listed for sale online 8/14/15 by the original owner's son (in Michigan) with an asking price of $22,000. Sold, and picked up by the current owner/current seller on approximately 8/18/15. Ebay listed on 8/19/15 for $50,000.

Potential bidders/buyers should Google search the phone number in the Ebay ad. Interesting results.

Yeah, does a sport steering wheel typically wear smooth in 30K miles of driving?

how'd everyone on this forum miss the original opportunity, bummer. Just wish more folks would find cars that they want to keep it. Nothing wrong with making a buck but....

Kenneth, I can't answer that accurately. I've seen cars that have 200k on them and look pristine. I've also seen cars with 30k on them that look beat to crap and worn out. I apologize if my comment came across wrong.
