I have a customer's 70 Cutlass Supreme convertible that we are about to start a restoration on and I like to provide all the correct data to them before we recommend anything and also to make them aware of EXACTLY what the car is. Im trying to determine what the car came with from Lansing assembly plant. It is a complete car and not molested at all, But I want to know everything I can about the car moving forward. Unable to locate some of the codes and need some help determining driveline .
What is trim code 974.
What is the driveline decode out as .
Engine displacement,
Transmission
Rear axle ratio

Sould be a 350 engine, post pics of the engine compartment, front of drivers head, near #1 spark plug, rear...you'll have to pull the cover, but most likely 2.56 gears, but stiffer were available.

 

Also rear end ratio can be decoded from the stamping on the axle housing on the driver's side of the rear end. It is a two digit code that will probably start with an S.

Or you can get a rough idea by how many turns the driveshaft makes with one revolution of the rear tire.

We did a 68 firebird and the rear axle housing had a 2 digit hand stamped numbers on the tubing ,,, Is that the general way to id the 70 olds cutlass axle??

The cylinder block has a casting number below front of the intake. Will that help ID the cubic inch if the engine?

The engine has a factory Rochester 4 BBL , but with single exhaust??? I that what should be one for exhaust system?

I will drop the gas tank on Monday and look for the build sheet above the tank.

Yes if the gear ratio hasn't been changed the two digit code will tell us what the ratio is. 350 4bbl was standard with N10 (dual exhaust) optional and mandatory with 3.42:1 or 3.91:1 also optional ratios. Chances are that it is 2.56:1 if it came with the TH350 as this was standard ratio for that transmission.

Being a Lansing car, I wouldn't waste my time looking for a build sheet because they are pretty much non-existent due to the fact that they were all filed in the trash can after assembly unlike other plants where they are fairly common to be found throughout the car.

 

between the oil fill tube and the water pump is where you want to look, the numbers are fairly large and should be easy to read if there isn't too much gunk built up.

 

This is a speedo gear chart, but it also lists the available axle ratios with the corresponding codes.
