1970-72 Cutlass / 4-4-2 headlight question

Hope everyone’s doing well and enjoying working in their garage on their favorite hobby. I was aiming my headlights last night and was amazed at how simply the individual headlight assemblies are secured. Am I correct when I see that it’s just three clips at 12 4 and 8 o’clock, that the bezels secure onto, and that’s really all that holds the headlight in place. Or am I missing something.

Are you talking about the headlight BUCKETS that the bulb sits in, the headlight BEZELS (retaining rings) that hold the bulbs in the buckets, or the headlight DOORS that are the trim that goes around the headlights?

The buckets have two adjusting screws and a spring. Any more than that and it would be over-constrained, which would prevent adjustment. The retaining rings have three screws. Have yours ever fallen out? These aren't highly loaded parts.

Thanks Joe, I’m referring to the retaining ring bezels. My low beam passenger side bezel easily pops off the headlamp (that sits in the ‘bucket’)

And yes the headlight could fall out fairly easily - is this not uncommon

In nearly half a century of driving these cars, I've never heard of or seen that.

When the bezel is removed, the headlight does not seem very secure in the bucket. Should the bezel have the brackets (at four, eight and 12 o’clock) attached to the bezel, or attached to the bucket?

Headlights aligned 👍

The stainless round bezel attaches to the headlight bucket with 3 small screws, this holds the headlight in place. Once that is secured, there are adjustment screws on each bucket to do any necessary fine tuning of the bulbs light direction.

Thanks Indy guy, my retaining ring bezel on one of the low beams had failed and was not securing the headlight properly, but I was able to repair it.

Again, thanks to both of you for your responses.
