1968 Y74 option .??

Quick question regarding the 1968 Y74 option - GT stripe delete paint option

What stripe does this delete? What is the GT stripe?

Thanks in advance.

On the '68 4-4-2, there was an option called the "Y70 G.T. Paint Stripe". On convertibles, it was a narrow stripe that ran the length of the car on both sides, just below the stainess trim that runs from front fender to rear bumper. An example of this can be seen on page 59 of "Oldsmobile 4-4-2 and W-Machines Restoration Guide" by T. Patrick Sullivan. On hardtops, it was again a narrow stripe that followed the same path as the wider stripe along each side of the Hurst Olds. The "Illustrated Facts & Features Manual for the 1968 Oldsmobile" says the Y70 G.T. Paint Stripe was a "standard 4-4-2 feature". Accordingly, if you did not want that G.T. Paint Stripe, or, if you instead wanted the "W36 Rallye Paint Stripe" (that's the vertical paint stripe on the aft portion of the front fenders), the option code "Y74 G.T. STRIPE DELETE PAINT OPTION" would appear on the window sticker. My car has the W36 stripe. I've attached a copy of my original window sticker so you can see how the Y74 option appeared.

Great information Randy. Cool to see the original window sticker. Where do I find those books you mentioned? Sounds like they would be helpful in my restoration. This is my first classic olds (had a 96 delta 88, but it was not the same) and it has been a learning experience trying to figure out how everything is supposed to be.

Thanks for the great information "rcorrigan5"!

That all makes sense now as my car is a W30 and has the W36 stripe, which is standard - therefore the "GT" stripe would be deleted.

On my window sticker it does not have the W36 stripe listed as an option because it was standard on the W30 but i do have the Y74 - GT stripe delete option listed.

Thanks again.

I got those books at swap meets. I'm fairly sure you can also find them through various advertisers in Hemmings Motor News and the Olds Club of America publication "Journey With Olds".

This site is also a fantastic source of info in doing a restoration. It helped me tremendously, in addition to ut being a continuous learning venue for me even after my restoration was complete. Whoever put together and structured this site is owed a great big "thank you" for doing it the way they did.
