1966 Toronado front Hub Bearing assembly removal HELP needed!!

1966 Toronado front Hub Bearing assembly removal HELP needed!!

Hi All, I was wondering if I am missing something. I have a 1966 Toronado with stock front drum brakes. The Left wheel bearing was a little loose and I am replacing it. I was able to "find" a NOS Hub bearing assembly, the splined hub with bearing and mounting plate all as a unit. MY thoughts are once I removed the 4 bolts holding it onto the spindle, it should come out like a hub/bearing on a modern FWD car. Issue is after prying and heating it seems stuck to the spindle. Shouldn't this just pull out of the spindle once all 4 bolts are removed am I missing something? I think this is another HOUR job that will mushroom into a whole day affair! I did both of mine a couple of years ago on my '66. I used a slide hammer to remove them. The driver's side came out easy. The passenger side, I had to slide hammer for at least a half hour, probably longer......I used a long towel wrapped around the weight to give me some sling shot action. Even using that towel trick, I was beat to a snot by the time I got it out. I used a large press and a 4" bearing splitter to pull the bearings from the hubs.

Hey Thanks a MILLION!!! I Thought that I was on the right track that in theory say the car was like 2 months old way back in 1966 and you needed to removed that hub for whatever reason that after the axle nut and 4 hub to spindle bolts were removed that it would just pull out of the hub. Seems it IS that way just 60 years of being married to the Knuckle bonded the two together, I'll have to get back at it another day. So after you installed new bearings to the splined hub you were able to just insert it back into the spindle, right? I am assuming you had to clean up the inside surfaces of where the bearing slides into the knuckle with emery cloth or a wire brush on a drill or something, right? Once I do all this I intend on giving the surround a coat of grease to keep it from rusting again. I noticed the lip seal where the end of axle goes into the hub was shot so likely over the years moisture road salt etc got in there and did a number. Thanks again! BTW I googled this and saw your post that showed from Facebook with those exact pictures but I don't have FB so I couldnt comment or contact you there. I wondered THIS GUY would definitely know the answer! LOL

They're just plain wheel bearings pressed on to a plain hub surface, Unless your talking about the splines on the hub where it interfaces with the driveshaft?

Yes, everything had to be cleaned up pretty good prior to re-install. I did put the hub/bearing into my deep freeze for a couple days and greased everything up lightly prior to installing. They went in pretty snug but not difficult. I also replaced the bearing seals as well (Fusick sells the seals).

The FB Toronado page is an absolute gong show. I hate having discussions on there these days. There are a few people on there who are really good and they're the only ones worth listening to. The rest are a bunch of trolls/wannabees/AI regurgitators who are actually know-nothing-know-it-alls who would probably tell you that your ethanol gasoline and vapor lock is the reason for your stuck wheel bearings.
