1966 442 tail light bezels

I see Thorntons has made another run of the 66 tail light bezels. Good news for us 66 442 owners. On eBay now.

What is the experts appearance and fit review on these?

Chrome plating especially expert restoration of pot metal has been hit by inflation. It was very expensive before and now at least for me is almost beyond practical consideration for a part which could be replaced at much lesser cost. Might be wise to buy a set of these, wrap them in tissue and store them in my dresser drawer for the day final assembly arrives. Anyway, can't imagine losing money over the long term even at $400 final cost if they check out.

Thanks Andy and to the others for the avalanche of comments ;-/ They went on sale down to $319 at Thornton's so a pair of those will appear under our Xmas tree this year. Enough of a generous drop to move Santy Claus in to action - CW

Nice reproduction pieces.

The most need is for the long 66 decklid emblem. I do not believe that they have ever been reproduced.

They're nice repops but not detailed correctly as an original nos set.

Do you recall who reproduced that piece and when? I have seen some GM pieces that were sent for re-chroming. All of them lost the detail around the letters.

NOS and early reproduction will have the proper flat red around the lens. Mine are NOS.

Says right on the add, you need to do the red and the frost on your own. Try finding a set of NOS 66 tail lights.. they are damn nice…

On the risk of sounding stupid why in the word did they paint that section flat red please ??? I don't like it, but factory is correct I get that.

Wish I had waited for those. Paid $496 apiece to have mine re-chromed. Above the bumper view looks good. Below the bumper they Still have some pits. Oh well,

Bought a pair of these, can someone chime in on how to remove the light assy?
Can I remove it without removing the rear bumper?
I took the outer cover off (4 nuts) and it seems like the only way to get the inner cover assy (Bezel and Cover) out is to hit it with a rubber mallet toward the rear???
It's the only way I can think that this assy can be removed. ...and it did not budge, but did not hit it too hard
I could not find the info in either the shop or assy manual..

You will need to loosen up the rear bumper so it drops down a little to get the light assembly out and back in. No need to remove the bumper..Gently tap with a rubber hammer from inside the trunk, the seal is stuck to the body from years of being on.

Thanks Andy,

Thinking that I should loosen the bolts on the frame to drop the bumper, or am I on the wrong fasteners?

yes, the bumper brackets that go to the frame or which one loosen so basically you can just rock the bumper down a little bit to clear that very end lip, low lip on those bezels

I removed the original bezels after dropping the bumper down a bit. I dry fitted the repops and they're not fitting the contour that well. I thought these were Thornton repops but they may not be. Got them off eBay and vendor is also located in PA , so I thought it may have been a Thornton reseller. I did not fasten them to the lens bucket but I dont think that matters. I still think they are not a great fit. They look great but as I stated, they they don't follow the contour top to bottom and have gaps mostly on top and nearest to the trunk side. I got them from The Motor Company eBay Item number 116397004107 . They are less expensive than the Thornton's, but fitting correctly is definitely more important. I'd imagine that CANADIANOLDS got the Thornton's so would like to know if there are any fitment issues with them. I see that Andy is happy with the Thornton's so just waiting to see if others are happy with them as well.

Did you try them with the new outer rubber gaskets? When tightened they conform to the contour better. Thornton is the only vendor for the 66 442 T/L bezels.

I took the gasket off and did an A / B comparison. I need new gaskets, and looks like Fusick has them, Pretty pricey, but they're pretty thick and mine are trash. The space between the body and bezel was significant but I did not want to run the fastener in because I may return them.. Going to check again and probably will contact Thornton to see if the ones I bought were his.

I just tried to attach the left side bezel to the bucket, and it did not fit until I took an adjustable wrench to the bucket and opened it up a bit. It then fit but not as good as my factory piece. .The interference was on the bottom right. I think I'm just going to have my originals plated. If they're not Thornton's then I may give those a try, but the originals fit nicely and these don't. . PIC's attached showing the bezels and the boxes they came in. The boxes look like they are from Asia , maybe Taiwan or China...not certain.

they’re all made somewhere in Asia at the same place…they are peddled by a few Olds vendors, so it shouldn’t matter where you got them..only the price would be different.

I tried mine on the opening when I first got them…they fit the body opening perfect..bracket also fits good. this is on an original paint car so the opening has never been whacked

‘Trunk trim is decent, fair amount of pimpling, just cleaned and repainted it.

Is there any other vendor out there selling these gaskets other than Fusick? They want like $47 for the pair. Just seeing if I can save some money.

I think I'm going to try installing them again with the gaskets.

Fusick is the only place I know who has them. You can try some universal rubber weather striping but I highly recommend using the gaskets that are molded to fit the bezels.

It's an unusual gasket. Seems to be a compressible fiber gasket (compresses and takes form) with an overlay of thin butyl or some other non curing sealant. I'd imagine it being for water sealing. I dunno I'm used to the foam gaskets they used on later years.

That gasket is the actual sealing gasket. The outside gasket is not the sealing gasket.

Does the outside gasket (Bezel to Body) have that same stickiness to it? Mine is broken (L-Shaped now not U-Shaped) and whoever was in there last used butyl to make up the rest of it. I want to avoid getting any sticky stuff on a part I may want to return.

This is how my original bezels fit. Kinda hard to see but there is a very small gap on the right top and also on the left, but hardly noticeable.

The outer seals/gaskets are like weather stripping, not sticky @ all. They are of a foam type gasket.
