1964 B09 package

Got a call from a guy looking to sell what he claims is a 64 "331" police package engine with a 2 speed trans. I already know he's mistaken and it should be 330. My question is i dont ever recall a 2 speed available tied to that engine, just the 4 spped manual. Bullshit fishing expidition or worth checking out? Any stampings to verify the B09 and not a regular 4 barrell? Engine color? Thanks Pat

Fishing expedition. Methinks that the horsepower increase was from better breathing, but interested in what those in the know, know.

"The 4-4-2 package gets its name from the fact that the car’s engine had a 4-barrel carb, the transmission was a 4-speed manual, and it had dual exhaust. The package took the largest engine Oldsmobile offered for mid-sized cars, a 330 CID V8 and added the Police Apprehender Pursuit Package that Oldsmobile used for its larger cars. This equipment included a dual-snorkel air cleaner and a premium quality rod as well as main bearings. These tweaks brought the engine from its normal 290 horsepower up to 310."

The police apprehender packages were B01 and B07, and were typically available with AT as well as MT. The B09 442 was technically not one of the police packages, it just used most of the hardware with a unique cam.

I don't believe there was any visible way to verify the engines were anything special ?

The engine unit number with a "T" prefix and a "G" suffix was used on every high compression 330 4bbl motor built in 1964 and 65. The engine unit numbers started with 001xx in 1964 and 5xxxx in 1965. I can't read the number in the photo. The air cleaner is a 1965 style. The water pump is a 1965-newer pump, not the correct 1964 pump with the driver side inlet. To use this pump, both the timing tab and the balancer would need to be changed to the 1965-newer style. Exhaust manifold 381921 was used on every 1964-67 Olds 330. Intake manifold 387691 is a 1965-only intake. The evidence suggests that this is not a 1964 motor but a 1965 item, so not surprisingly the seller's story is a total fabrication.

Just to clarify, the Police Apprehender packages were RPO B01 (City Apprehender) and B07 (Highway Apprehender). B09 was the RPO code for the 1964 442 package, and despite what you may read, it was not a "police apprehender" package. The B09 cars got the same suspension (springs, shocks, and front and rear anti-sway bars) as the B07 cars. The engine in the B09 package was the 310 HP version of the 330 with a unique cam and air cleaner. The B01 and B07 cars got the 290 HP version.

Thanks for the info Joe. My first impression when I saw the set up was 65 but I wasnt going to argue with the guy unless I knew it for sure. He wants $1200 so I passed quickly.
